Right next to Pennsylvania at the World War II Memorial, you’ll find the “Kilroy was here” doodle and I visited it just last week. ✨ During WWII an inspector in the shipyard left his unique, comic mark, that he had been there, to show he had inspected that particular vessel. GIs adopted it and began leaving it when they would arrive at a new place. It boosted morale and it became a code among them. Also letting others they weren’t alone when they came upon it. This carried over into Korea and it has special significance to me because every card I ever received from my grandfather was signed “Love, Boompa” and then he included the Kilroy doodle. ❤️ On Thanksgiving I read through so many letters my grandfather had sent home from Korea. He graduated from Valley Park High School right as war was breaking out. Not the best timing for him, but he chose to enlist instead of getting drafted. He and his friends thought it would go better for them. It really didn’t. He wrote home to his mother every week. She kept all of the letters. He was her youngest child. My grandfather had played point guard in high school basketball and was actually really good at it with write-ups in the paper about his skill. It was touching to read in letters where he asked about teammates who were playing college basketball at University of Missouri, not yet drafted. Oh how he must have wished he was there with them. At first, he started out in Japan. Then he sent a letter saying, “Well, I’m now in Korea.” He had gone in at Inchon. I cannot imagine the horror that must have been. In each letter he always included to his mom that he was safe and not to worry because he was going to be okay. 🥹 This Thanksgiving season, I’m thankful that he did make it back home. I’m so very thankful for those who fight for our freedoms and work hard to bring freedom to others. The contractor thought my husband was crazy when he asked for hooks to be placed at the top of each column on our front porch. But this is THE way to wrap columns with lights or garland using a telescoping pole. 🎄✨ The time has come to say goodbye to the Christmas lights. I’m sad to see the green theme go. Is it Wicked? Stake Conference today so we took the family Sunday pictures on the road! ✨ Just a little bit further down the road from home so it wasn’t a total trek. Haha when you see all the pictures. 🤣 There was a slideshow going before the meeting started, of pictures from the youth trek over the summer. I loved being able to see pictures of my oldest (who is now a missionary in Brazil) pulling handcarts over the summer. He was in so many photos and looked to be having so much fun while experiencing something difficult. Fireside dancing, pioneer games, and finding joy in the hardships. For those who don’t know, this is a reenactment that the youth in our church sometimes do to experience just a fraction of what it was like to be a pioneer. They camp for several days, eat food from the time period, and push/pull handcarts for a crazy number of miles each day. It’s supposed to give them greater knowledge of what the early Saints went through, forced to leave their homes in Missouri under an extermination order, settling in Nauvoo, IL to only then be forced to walk across the plains to a mostly uninhabitable Utah… Sounds like the Mormon Pioneers were living the dream. And yet they kept going. Because they believed in something so strongly and it was so important to them, to have religious freedom. I think that’s something we all need to be reminded of sometimes. That there are things worth continuing to push and pull for. People walked ahead for us but it shouldn’t stop with them.
