From the stories we inherit to the ones we’re still making, there’s a whole world of memory and heritage that deserves to be seen, shared and kept alive.

Join us for our first film festival, a day of films that challenge, stories that liberate and ideas that refuse to fit neatly into the ways we’ve been taught to see. A day where the past can sit beside the present as history becomes a way of imagining.

What does Sasa na Zamani really mean?

The concept challenges the Western idea that time moves only forward. The past remains present, with history, memory and lived experience continuing to shape us.

But it is bigger than an idea about time. It asks us to question the way we understand where we come from, where we are, and where we are going.

Across film, literature, and music, there are artists who have understood this deeply. Artists who see history as something alive and the future as something we are already creating.

Here are five of them.

🎞️ FILM FESTIVAL CALLOUT 🎞️
Submissions are open.

This November, See My World is hosting its first Film Festival @contactmcr dedicated to Pan-African and Global Majority films from the North of England, and we’d love to showcase your work. Whether you’re an emerging filmmaker or have been making work for years, we want to hear from you.

The festival programme draws on the Swahili conception of time developed by Kenyan philosopher John Mbiti, which challenges Western conceptions of time.

We are are looking to for films guided by Pan-African principles of decolonisation, social justice, and racial equality, in search of strategies for liberation. How does liberation, especially for black and global majority communities, express itself?

You don’t need to make something new for the festival. If you have an existing film (up to 30mins) that speaks to the themes in any way, and it has not had prior theatrical or commercial streaming release, we’d love to see it.

There’s no submission fee, and selected filmmakers will receive a £100 honorarium for the screening of their work.

📅 Deadline: 9 October

Walk with us 🚶🏾‍♀️🚶🏿

A beautiful recap of our Pan-African Legacies Heritage Trail walking tour hosted by historian Linford Sweeney!

The walking trail is rooted in the enduring legacy of the 1975 Pan-African Congress — a historic gathering that brought influential African and Caribbean activists, intellectuals and organisers to Manchester to shape global liberation movements.

If you weren’t able to join us on our walking tour, head over to our website where you can download our heritage trail map 🔗 linked in bio
