October looks a little different from where I’m standing this year.

Before Scottie, I knew pregnancy and infant loss happened. I knew October was dedicated to raising awareness. But I didn’t know what it meant to live through it. I didn’t know how much love could exist alongside so much heartbreak, or how important it would become to have people remember a little girl they never got to meet.

I wish I were learning about this month from the outside. I wish Scottie were here. But she has changed the way I see the world, and I want to do something meaningful with the love I have for her.

That’s a big part of why I created Seen By Scottie.

This space began with my daughter, but my hope is that it grows into something bigger than our story. A place to remember our babies, share the things that have helped, have conversations that aren’t always easy, and remind the people walking alongside us that their presence matters.

Throughout October, I’ll be sharing more about Scottie, honoring other babies and their parents, and talking about the many ways we can show up for families experiencing loss.

I want there to be room for the hard things here. But I also want there to be room for joy, hope, laughter, ordinary life, and all the love that continues long after goodbye.

Because Scottie’s story is so much more than the fact that she died. And I hope that, through this little corner of the internet, her life can continue to make a difference.

For Scottie, and for every baby who deserves to be remembered. 🤎🍀 by @seenbyscottie

There really are no right words for a moment like this. But looking back through these texts, I realized how much the little things mattered.

The people who checked in without needing an update. The ones who thought about what we might need before we even knew we needed it. The ones who offered to come, but made it just as okay to say not yet. The ones who reminded me to eat, let me be quiet, made me laugh, and never expected anything back.

I don’t remember everything that was said to me during those first few weeks, but I remember how these messages made me feel.

Loved. Cared for. And a little less alone. 🤍 by @seenbyscottie

After we lost our baby, our friend Sophia named a star after her.

She chose one in our baby’s zodiac constellation.

Of all the beautiful things people gave us to remember her, this is one I come back to often.

I love knowing there is something permanent out there with her name on it. Something I can look up at and find when I’m missing her.

A little place in the universe that is hers. 🤍 by @seenbyscottie

When we lost our baby, so many people in our lives wanted to help. The truth is, most of the time we didn’t know what we needed. And even if we did, we didn’t always have the capacity to ask for it.

These are some of the things people did for us that we still think about.

They brought us food. They made decisions when we couldn’t make another one. They checked in without needing a response. They remembered the dates that mattered. They let us talk about pregnancy, birth and postpartum. They asked about our baby. They said her name.

None of these things took away our grief. They weren’t supposed to. They just made us feel a little less alone in it.

I’m sharing this because when someone you love is going through pregnancy loss, it can be really hard to know what to do or say. You’re scared of saying the wrong thing, so sometimes you end up saying nothing at all.

This isn’t a rulebook. Everyone grieves differently and what helped us might not be what someone else needs. These are simply the things that made us feel loved, remembered and seen.

If you’ve experienced pregnancy loss, I’d love to know what someone did for you that you still remember.

Maybe the comments here can become a resource for someone who wants to show up for a person they love and just doesn’t know how. by @seenbyscottie
