No one tells you the difficulties of grief while planning a wedding. One second, you’re filled with excitement until you remember that one special person won’t be in attendance. Luckily, my friends and family honored my sister, Reagan, so well on our wedding day. I thought I’d share @carolinehagan7’s maid of honor speech that summed up Reagan’s impact on our lives so eloquently.

Today marks 21 years without her & while I still miss her deeply, as Caroline said best, her presence can be found in the lives of those who knew her. In their stories, their laughter & their faith. That is the legacy she left behind & we are all the better for it.

I love you little sis. Can’t wait to see that silly face someday. šŸ’œ taken in New Orleans, Louisiana by @thelittlehenning

Twenty-five years ago, we lost my sister, Reagan Reid Little. I’m thinking of my girls, the beautiful connection they share, and the love that ties us together. Forever connected. Forever loved. Forever missing them both. Thank you for the little signs that remind me you’re never far away. šŸ¤šŸ¦‹ taken in Shreveport, Louisiana by @thelittlehenning

The last three months have held more love than I ever thought possible.

On March 16, I began maternity leave to deliver our sleeping baby, Scottie Reid Henning. Since then, I’ve experienced a kind of love that can only come from God working through His people.

My employer gave me every day of my maternity leave without hesitation. My parents called every single day just to make sure I was okay. Friends got on planes and drove across the country to sit beside us. Friends I hadn’t heard from in years sent dinners. Strangers prayed for us. Former coworkers sent flowers.

None of it has been lost on me. We have been unbelievably loved.

From the moment we walked into the hospital wondering if we were pregnant to the day we walked out without our daughter in our arms, God never stopped showing us His love. Sometimes it came through quiet moments. Most often, it came through people.

People often tell me, ā€œI don’t know how you do it. I couldn’t.ā€ The truth is, I never had another choice. I had to keep breathing. I had to keep waking up. I had to keep putting one foot in front of the other.

But I have never done it alone.

It has been these faces, these hands, these prayers, these meals, these calls, these tears, and the God I love and trust who have carried me forward, day after day.

They say motherhood takes a village. Motherhood after losing your baby does too.

And thank God for the village that has carried Scottie’s mom and dad. šŸ¦‹šŸ©µ we love you all. taken in Dallas, Texas by @thelittlehenning

A little progress update ✨

I went back to see @taylorpeck_np at @skin_pharm to target a few lingering dark spots and continue treating the melasma I developed during pregnancy.

I’m always amazed by how personalized the experience feels, and I’m excited to see these results come in over the next few weeks.

My referral link in bio gets you $100 off your first Skin Pharm visit. šŸ¤ taken in Dallas, Texas by @thelittlehenning

ā€œAnd if not, He is still good.ā€ Daniel 3:18

The past two weeks have gone by in a blur, & I can’t help but feel like the further away we get from Scottie’s birthday, the further away I feel from her.

So forgive me for posting more of my girl, but this is how I’m choosing to honor her.

By sharing my grief & my love for her, by saying her name, by writing it down, I’m sharing with the world one of the greatest loves I’ve ever known.

When I delivered Scottie, I was so scared to look at her.

My OB explained that in some stillbirth cases, it can be immediately obvious what caused their passing. I didn’t know what to expect. I try to give myself grace, but I still struggle with shame & guilt for being scared to see my beautiful girl.

But there were no signs. No visible indicator. She was just beautiful. She was just at peace.

They placed her in my arms, & I began to weep for this child. For my child.

Through my tears, I searched her face for any similarities to myself. Like any newborn, she was swollen & covered in vernix. I looked at her eyes, her nose, her lips, her eyebrows… desperate to see myself in this little girl.

I didn’t.

Maybe it was grief or shock, but I just couldn’t see anything that resembled me.

I was angry. I was devastated.

I had spent almost 9 months loving her & carrying her, only to be heartbroken not only by the tragic turn of events, but also by not being able to see myself in her.

Friends & family kept reassuring me:
ā€œShe’s your twin.ā€
ā€œMeredith, she looks just like you.ā€

But I couldn’t see it.

The next day, while I was in recovery, I got up to use the restroom. I had been crying for days.

I walked into the bathroom & saw myself in the mirror for the first time, my eyes swollen, my face red.

& there she was, looking right back at me.

My Scottie in every inch of my face.

It’s crazy to think that in the depths of grief, God still shows up for us.

He gives us peace beyond understanding, & His love & compassion are always near — even if it’s found in a hospital mirror.

We may not have our daughter with us here, but I get to visit with her every day when I look in the mirror.

& for that, He is still unbelievably good. 🩵 taken in Dallas, Texas by @thelittlehenning
