Buy a rock, help a student.

Students are selling rocks and plants outside of Trowbridge Hall this week to help reduce expenses for students participating in field courses at the School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability.

Stop by on Oct. 12-14 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Cash and Venmo are accepted. University of Iowa students peruse rocks and plants at the Earth, Environment and Sustainability club sale outside Trowbridge Hall. by @sees_ui

The Earth, Environment, and Sustainability Club was featured on the CLAS News page! The article, written by Sadie Staker, focuses on how the student-led group is able to raise funds for field trips through their plant and rock sales. EES Club President and SEES Undergraduate Student, Abbey Steger, described the club and what it's like to go on field trips! Dr. Kate Tierney, and Katie Bottorff also contributed to the story!

Join us this Friday, 10/2, 3:30-4:30pm in 𝗣𝗕𝗕 𝗪𝟮𝟬𝟳 (Moved from SH140).*

This week's colloquium speaker is Adam Pollack, Assistant Professor, School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability (at THE University of Iowa 😉), who will share insights from recent research about quantitative methods and policy approaches for allocating limited resources for flood-risk reduction more efficiently and equitably.

Deets @ bit.ly/pollack_10_2 or cs.uiowa.edu!

* Due to an event on the Pentacrest that will include amplified sound and large crowds starting at 10 a.m.. For that same reason: no reception to follow this week - Ask your questions during/after talk! Friday, Oct. 2, 3:30 - 4:30 pm CS Colloquium Series Quantifying and managing climate risks and inequitable outcomes Adam Pollack, Ph.D. Abstract available at cs.uiowa.edu Assistant Professor, School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, University of Iowa RM 140 SH - (reception to follow in MLH 3) taken in University of Iowa by @sees_ui

On Saturday the Museum of Natural History @pentacrest.museums and SEES created a program for graduate and undergraduate students to explore Ashton Prairie and get a behind the scenes look at the museum with a focus on bugs! Students engaged in a prairie scavenger hunt and insect id. They also learned about various sides of conservation from live studies, to specimen prep and specimen studies at museums. It was a fun and engaging day! #SEEStheday by @sees_ui

Congrats to Dr. Sam Hudziak on your dissertation defense!

Dr. Hudziak will be a postdoctoral scholar, here at UI, with Dr. Emily Finzel!

Abstract: The Saunders Ash is an anomalously thick volcanic deposit preserved more than 12 km from its inferred source at Mt. Taranaki, New Zealand. Its age, eruptive origin and relationship to Taranaki’s evolving magmatic plumbing system have remained uncertain. Stratigraphy, radiocarbon dating and componentry analysis were used to establish the age and eruptive character of the deposit. Plagioclase textures and compositions were investigated using backscattered electron (BSE) imaging, and electron microprobe (EMP) analysis, together with in situ laser ablation multi collector inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) Sr-isotope analysis. In situ laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) was used to characterize anorthite and trace-element variability within plagioclase domains and across high-resolution rim transects, while solution ICP-MS provided major and trace-element compositions of lithic fractions from the Saunders Ash.

New radiocarbon ages place the Saunders Ash eruption at approximately 21.6 ka cal BP and, together with componentry and stratigraphic relationships demonstrate that it was distinct from the older Poto Tephras and major sector collapse events at Mt. Taranaki. Plagioclase textures, major and trace-element compositions and Sr-isotope ratios reveal a diverse crystal cargo assembled through magma storage, recycling, recharge and partial re-equilibration within a heterogeneous magmatic system. Comparison with younger Taranaki eruptive products indicates that the dominant Sr-isotopic and broader geochemical characteristics of the magmatic system were already present by the time of the Saunders Ash eruption and persisted through construction of the modern edifice (<14 ka). Together, these results refine the late-Pleistocene eruptive history of Mt. Taranaki, provide insight into the long-term evolution of the magmatic plumbing system, and demonstrate that Mt. Taranaki can generate laterally extensive pyroclastic density currents independent of sector collapse.

This past weekend, SEES' 4th year undergraduate students went on a field trip course to Wisconsin and the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior. Dr. Ben Swanson and Dr. Kate Tierney led the trip of intrepid explorers as they practiced field skills. Students and the professors provided feedback that it was a beautiful and informative trip!
