America’s grasslands are where we go to fish, hike, and camp. They’re home to extraordinary wildlife. They’re working lands. They’re a source of clean water and air for millions of Americans. And they are disappearing.

🌿Welcome Kara!🌿

Kara is a Restoration Technician with SGI based in Roanoke, Virginia. A Roanoke native, she graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Ecological Restoration. She began her career working with riparian buffer restoration projects, but fell in love with grasslands while conducting plant surveys with Smithsonian’s Virginia Working Landscapes. Kara is excited to continue learning about these ecosystems while helping to actively restore and protect them across this region.

Join us in welcoming Kara to the SGI team!

During SGI’s (@segrassland) last visit to Bask, our Director of Land Stewardship and Plant Ecology Owen Reich (@plantxalchemy ) and SGI’s Chief of Ecological Restoration Jeremy French (@grasslands_roamer) took a moment to look back on the evolution of Bask’s main meadow after shared collaborative efforts of restoration. Through partnership with SGI, Bask has been able to properly restore the meadow through practices that don’t require harmful chemicals or intervention. The meadow in question is considered an extremely rare ecosystem.

Special thanks to SGI and their staff for their collaboration and help over the years with restoring Bask’s ecosystems! Want to help contribute? Consider donating at the link in our bio to help ensure that Bask can continue to upkeep its land for years to come. taken in Bask Retreat Center by @segrassland

🌱Thank you TDEC & volunteers who came out to help SGI steward May Prairie in Manchester, TN!

Fun fact: May Prairie is home to Estes’ aster (Symphyotrichum estesii), named for our Co-Founding Executive Director Dwayne Estes, a species that is found only within a very limited range in Tennessee.

A couple weeks ago, we had the pleasure of hosting SGI (@segrassland) at Bask once again for a walk through of the property. Jeremy French, Chief of Ecological Restoration at SGI (@grasslands_roamer) spotted Silphium integrifolium var. gattingeri, part of an old growth population here at Bask. This particular plant, only in old growth populations, has been linked to a possible entirely new wasp species.

Stay tuned for more information about rare, native plants here at Bask! taken in Bask Retreat Center by @segrassland
