The Southeastern Grasslands Institute is saving forgotten grasslands of the Southeast.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Grasslands are among the most endangered ecosystems on Earth, and the fight to save them just got a boost. 🌾

The Southeastern Grasslands Institute brought together researchers, landowners, and conservation pros at the Eastern Native Grasslands Symposium last week in Hopkinsville to share science, strategies, and success stories.

Learn more about the volunteering opportunities and other amazing work happening through SGI at segrasslands.org. A person with glasses and a beard is speaking to an audience in a conference setting. The speaker is wearing a name tag and stands in front of beige and brown partitioned walls. Audience members are seated and facing the speaker.

We had a great time attending the Eastern Native Grasslands Symposium in Hopkinsville, Kentucky!

We enjoyed listening to presentations, sharing knowledge, and spending time with so many people who share our passion for eastern native grasslands.

We were also happy to have the opportunity to welcome attendees to Roundstone Native Seed for a tour of our facilities!

A big thank you to @segrassland for putting together such a great event, and to everyone who helped make it happen.

We’re grateful to be part of a community that continues to bring people together to learn, share ideas, and support the future of our native grasslands!

John joined Chris Fleming to discuss the National Park Service’s grassland restoration and reconstruction project, working to restore native grassland ecosystems across parks in the eastern and southern United States.

We enjoyed multiple tours across the region on Thursday!

Tyler joined Dr. Emma Neigel and Rachel Smith to discuss the Georgia Native Seed Network and the partnerships helping grow Georgia’s native seed industry.

Thanks for stopping by our booth this week!

Always learning, always exploring, always growing.

Thank you to @segrassland for coming by a few weeks ago to help us scope out Bask's property to help identify different types of native plants!

🚨🚨🚨He’s doing it again!!!!🚨🚨🚨

Carl is BACK with his second appearance of the week — this time all the way down in Kentucky! He’s been invited to speak at the 14th annual Eastern Native Grasslands Symposium hosted by the Southeastern Grasslands Institute @segrassland

Carl will be presenting on residential landscapes as the next frontier in native habitat creation. Meadows and grasslands don’t have to be relegated to the countryside. They can begin in our own front yards!

Keep spreading the word, Carl 🌱

Last month, the Mid-Atlantic Seed Partnership came together for two days of learning, sharing, and strengthening connections.

We kicked things off at NASA Goddard, where we got to see a ‘Meadow Morphosis’ in Progress, then headed to the USDA Norman A. Berg National Plant Materials Center for a facilities tour and some hands-on seed cleaning. Throughout the day, partners swapped tips, techniques, and lessons from their work with native seed.

On day two, we visited seed increase plots at the University of Maryland Extension’s Clarksville facility and heard presentations from partners across the region. We talked about how to grow seed partnerships, what we can learn from one another, and why this work matters—from increasing the availability of native seed to supporting pollinators and creating more resilient landscapes.

It was great to bring together longtime collaborators and people joining the conversation with fresh perspectives, experiences, and ideas for where this partnership can go next.

And we’re just getting started. Catch this group at the next National Native Seed Conference in March for our symposium, “Launching the Mid-Atlantic Partnership.”

During SGI’s (@segrassland) last visit to Bask, our Director of Land Stewardship and Plant Ecology Owen Reich (@plantxalchemy ) and SGI’s Chief of Ecological Restoration Jeremy French (@grasslands_roamer) took a moment to look back on the evolution of Bask’s main meadow after shared collaborative efforts of restoration. Through partnership with SGI, Bask has been able to properly restore the meadow through practices that don’t require harmful chemicals or intervention. The meadow in question is considered an extremely rare ecosystem.

Special thanks to SGI and their staff for their collaboration and help over the years with restoring Bask’s ecosystems! Want to help contribute? Consider donating at the link in our bio to help ensure that Bask can continue to upkeep its land for years to come.

A couple weeks ago, we had the pleasure of hosting SGI (@segrassland) at Bask once again for a walk through of the property. Jeremy French, Chief of Ecological Restoration at SGI (@grasslands_roamer) spotted Silphium integrifolium var. gattingeri, part of an old growth population here at Bask. This particular plant, only in old growth populations, has been linked to a possible entirely new wasp species.

Stay tuned for more information about rare, native plants here at Bask!

Thank you to Dr. Dwayne Estes for educating us on grasslands conservation and open woodlands in the Southeast. The “Prairie Preacher” has led an important initiative in saving these forgotten grasslands. For more information check out - www.segrasslands.org

Grasslands may be some of America’s least understood ecosystems, but they quietly provide clean water, store carbon, and sustain incredible wildlife from coast to coast. 💧☀️🦬

Once covering hundreds of millions of acres, these vital landscapes are now among our most threatened and least protected ecosystems. 🌾🚨

Ecologists sometimes distinguish between a #forest and a #woodland

Woodlands still have trees but at a lower density than forests. Depending on the site, this can allow for a greater diversity of wildflowers and pollinators. The trees still provide habitat and an insect food source for #wildlife

On National Wildlife Day, I am reminded that stewardship begins with observation. Before we can protect the life around us, we must first take the time to notice it.

At The Farm at Sinking Creek, Tracy and I are continually discovering just how much life surrounds us. During our BioBlitz this summer, scientists, naturalists, students, and neighbors used iNaturalist to photograph and document the species they encountered across the farm.

Together, they helped us surpass more than 1,000 documented species, from birds and butterflies to fish, salamanders, and countless smaller creatures that are easy to overlook. Each observation adds another piece to our understanding of this remarkable Appalachian landscape and helps inform how we care for it.

These are just seven of the wild neighbors found at Sinking Creek. What wildlife have you taken the time to notice where you live?

A day spent learning from the land. 🌿

On August 16, we welcomed Southeastern Grasslands Institute (@segrassland) to Bask for a walk through the property with our Director of Land Stewardship & Plant Ecology, Owen Reich (@plantxalchemy), and Jeremy French, Chief of Ecological Restoration at SGI.

Together, they explored the current state of the land and spotted several rare native plants, offering another glimpse into the biodiversity we’re working to understand and protect at Bask.

We captured some interesting conversations along the way. Stay tuned! 👀
