queer stories don’t need to be palatable to a straight audience for them to be worth of being told — no matter how taboo they can get.

recommending here five books, ranging from most to least palatable, that i greatly value as part of the canon. do check the trigger warnings for each one (especially, the last book!)

post is inspired by some of the best queer books i’ve read this year so far from darryl by @jackie_ess , fruit fly by @joshsilverauthor , and box hil!

fully recognizing that this is highly gay man-centric (with only one trans-adjacent books) and is something i’m actively going to try to improve as a reader!

🌱 would you be okay with a life that only makes sense to you? that society is not ‘impressed’ by?

— welcome to our usual spot, a safe space where stories linger, and serious media is a lot more accessible, and a lot less intimidating. if this is something that speaks to you, feel free to stick around and be a regular 🤎

today’s movie recommendation, ‘perfect days’ holds a soft spot for me — really capturing one of my favorite themes in both literature and cinema, which is the concept of “being” and “here”.

it’s a movie where nothing really much happens and yet i found myself smiling and smiling, and at one point where i wasn’t— it was still for good reason.

as someone is trying to notice life more, this movie is a great reminder to pay attention, slow down, and linger.

🎥 have you seen this movie? any plans to watch it?

many times in the past, i’ve benefited from reading both the novel form and the theory behind the ideas it explores. one lets me experience the question, the other gives me the language to think through it.

here are books on my tbr that explore a specific theme from the lens of fiction and nonfiction books.

if you’d like to do the same, you can get 25% off all Routledge Classics books until December 2 with my code 25SEIGF. link in bio.

felt a bit more shy this week but i did talk to my barista at my favorite cafe who was reading east of eden!!

read receipts 002 — the grief triptych (three 5 star reads 👀)

i refuse to let another book review die in my notes app!!!!!!

welcome to read receipts — every now and then, i’ll pick a few books i’ve read in the past and tell you what i thought about them. it is going to be a very random choice of books but im open to requests!!

this session:
1. a language of limbs
2. things in nature merely grow
3. monstrilio

this is 002 and i’m still very much figuring out what this series is as i go. it’ll probably change, look different, get better (hopefully) which will be fun.

now — which book intrigues you most? and what review do you want to see next? (also open to any other detail you’d want to see!)

36.5% of dutch high schoolers have a positive of view of homosexuality. take that in.

saw the post from @lhomo today and have not been able to get it out of my mine

living in amsterdam has made life so comfortable as a gay man. i’m openly queer, i have queer friends, i go to queer spaces, i read and watch queer stories all the time. most days i exist without thinking too much about it. what a privilege that is.

and then you see a number like this and remember how small your bubble can be. and how difficult life continues to be for many queer people TO THIS DAY.

no neat conclusion but a sobering statistic. remember to continue platforming queer works and people. because no one is free until all of us are free.

what are people in amsterdam reading? episode 01

nothing brings me as much joy as seeing people read in public. from parks, cafes, to bars, and public transpo. been seeing this lovely series from @luciaaa_shek in new york and decided to start an amsterdam series!

it’s been a nice exercise of talking to strangers about their books (half of these, i approached them to chat which was always so lovely)

so if you live in amsterdam and i say hi — pls dont be scared i promise im nice 🥹
