Flashing marks. Mystery marks on the bottom of your pots? We found the culprit: lithium.
We’ve been firing a lot of lithium-based glazes lately, and marks started appearing on work that had nothing to do with them.
Lithium oxide (Li₂O) is a powerful, low-viscosity flux — and at cone 5 to cone 10 it doesn’t only melt, it travels. Part of it volatilizes into a fine vapor that rises with the heat. The shelves trap it: the vapor spreads toward the shelf edges and collects under the shelf above, where it meets bare clay and neighboring glazes and leaves that flashed, discolored look.
1. An example of flashing in a glazed sample. 2. The discoloration on these feet came from a later cone 6 firing, from a glaze that was never on these pieces. by @sektor30
