The Tempest

So as it turns out Mark Twain was onto something with the “Do the thing you fear the most and the death of fear is certain”.

Before this show- I had resolved to be forever neutral about Tempest. I had grappled with it- Miranda in particular- for so long, to what felt like no avail. Miranda wasn’t a role I understood, she had never felt natural or instinctual to me, and I thought any chance of connecting with her had been permanently severed by disastrous attempts at scene study. I was afraid I’d never find my way to her, and she’d be this inauthentic shell of a girl people would tolerate until she’s ushered offstage.

The first read through rolled around, and I met the people who would help turn that fear on its head. Reading the scenes off the page, I discovered a tender and flawed Prospero across the way, met a soft and earnest Ferdinand to my left- and slowly- the ice began to thaw. As we continued world-building, day by day, it began to feel a little less daunting. And I have to gush- the sheer amount of artistry that went into creating the show still has me gobsmacked- I still struggle to articulate the majesty of it all.

I was given the gift to start from scratch- and what we built felt so deeply authentic. We were given the space to unearth so much truth about these people, distilling it into the text was second nature. I needed the freedom to find my way back to the heart of the story on my own terms, and once I did, with the help of the folks around me, it unfolded for me.

So if you’re sat in front of a choice, and waiting for a nudge- please take the plunge. You’ll learn more than you can fathom, and as my life keeeeeps trying to teach me, the projects that scare the living daylights out of you might just be the ones to help you grow the most.

I hesitated to write this for so long because some part of it felt like letting go. But after all this time I know now, I get to carry this with me. To my Prospero, to my Ferdinand, my corvid companion, my spirits of the wind, thank you, I miss you every day. Tempest, you strange tale, you seem to have my heart. 🩵

I know it’s nearly spring but WE’RE GOING IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER!!

Every Christmas Story Ever Told 🎄
Dec 11th-30th 2024

3 actors, 90 minutes, 10+ stories, 22 characters, 35 props, 14 hats, ~4 improv scenes, 25 freak Frosty accidents, 1 swing, 1 stagehand, 28 pockets of snow, and a partridge in an electrocuting Christmas treeeeee.

What GOOFS what GAFFS! What an insane joy it was to work on this show, and an honor to build it with such fantastic collaborators. Relieved we all survived the slightly murderous elf on the shelf and the horrors of fruitcake. And though we ended up as ill as the Victorian peasants, the solidarity of speedrunning the tissue boxes backstage can’t be beat 😂. Can’t wait to see everyone again someday, and by my tiny golden hammer, it will be so!!

Can you imagine performing with so many drop dead gorgeous people? And adoring them on and offstage?? Im the luckiest. They’re clever, they’re smart, THEY READ MUSIC!!! I’m pretty sure that’s why we had to close the run in the first place bc the talent levels emanating from the theater were nearing seismic proportions. But in all seriousness what a privilege to be among them and I can’t wait to see them again someday.

My perfectly marvelous swing siblings, @tanneressex @4.ivie 🩵 endlessly proud to be a swing alongside you both & honored to witness your astonishing talent and generosity. Thank you for your companionship and support, I’d see shows weekly with you any damn time.

By the end of our run, I ended up swinging in for 3/5 of my tracks. Though nerve wracking, it was also wildly empowering (track 4- I’ve got my eye on you. You know those hikes you did). And look at how many different hairs I got to wear?? (Not pictured: the gorilla… hair? She had a bow 🎀) Swing work is absuuuurdly challenging, but @kianadholmes @gabrielle_gore_ @mimimocatta I cannot thank you enough for your graciousness in sharing & trusting me with Lulu, Frenchie & Helga 🩷🤍🖤 I hope we cross paths in the KitKat Club again someday. Oh and Helga- Zelda wrote, she’s doing just fine. XOXO 💋.

To all my beloved Summit friends, thank you for coming and for your support. I loved that you took the time to come see the show, it was wonderful to see you there, and I miss you all very much.

Twelfth Night ⚓️

It took me the longest time to even begin writing this- there’s so much I could say, and also the fact that none of it even needs to be said bc the text preserves him perfectly- but Antonio haunts my every waking hour (partially due to the fact that I’m writing my thesis on him, but ikyk why else). I’ve rarely found a character as naturally as I came to find Antonio. To understand him is truly truly innate. It feels natural to walk in step with him- he appeals to our hearts, who he is makes sense to us. PATHOS PATHOS PATHOS. He makes so much sense, it’s impossible n o t to grieve for his betrayal- despite spending only three scenes with him. He has chosen his code of honor and is bound by love & loyalty, moving through a world that doesnotofferthesame and it’s heartbreaking. Chest-achingly unjust so AS @jopos92 RIGHTFULLY SAYS (& made a shirt echoing the sentiment) JUSTICE FOR ANTONIO!! See Fig. 8

AND HES A GAE PIRATE- Scuse me. Saltwater thief. Privateer. Ahem- SO CLEARLY THE COOLEST PART OF THE STORY. I am biased, I am writing extensively on Antonio BUT I MAINTAIN-) …But truly if you want your heart to crack, read Twelfth Night and note when Antonio changes to the affectionate Thee & Thou rather than a formal You/ Sir/ etc. and if you’re like me, just start crying in the coffee shop 🥲 PS My Antonio playlist is meticulously curated and you DO need to experience it. And if you miss Antonio like I do, read V.E. Schwab’s Darker Shade of Magic series. You’ll know when you find him.

Measure for Measure ⚖️

I didn’t think I’d have 10 photos to post about this show. I played ALL the friars, and what we, the inhabitants of the Vienna Monastery, provide are the plot and atmosphere- merely, my lord. But what I found out trying to pick JUST 10 photos is how much joy my cohort offered off the stage- even when trudging through the muck and the mud. What we choose to document matters, and what will last is the comfort and grace found in each other. Measure for Measure is a difficult show. It’s a c h a l l e n g e. It takes a tremendous amount of energy to see, let alone survive a 3 week run of it. Yet survive we did. We hunkered down in our Star Wars getups (not canon) and unleashed the force of the story. Astonishingly. And that IS a good thing, a beautiful thing. I have such admiration and adoration for everyone who shouldered this show, and the sheer volume of the work they did to create this world and their characters within it. Visit the cloister gardens any time you have need of medicinal herbs, Barnadine will supply you with them through the wall. He’s doing very well. Has a penchant for the poisonous plants. You can find Friar Thomas/Peter/Others meddling with wax seals in the Scriptorium should you require additional temporary meddling assistance for the sake of plot and Catholic atmosphere.

Macbeth 🗡🖤

Through hurley burleys, and battles lost and won, this Macbeth leapt from the minds of all 17 people in these photos. What emerged was a dark, evocative, twisted, and- not to be weary with you- but what I think was a visionary creation. We worked tirelessly through the darkest winter months facing the story’s beasts. Iterations upon iterations of personifying nightmares, refining horrors, and interrogating brutality. Looking back, I am proud of the arduous process (pictured), astonished at everyone’s endurance (not pictured), and truly lucky to have pieced it together with the support of the artists around me. There’s no one else I’d endure drilling Shakespearean kneeling technique with.
