I had the pleasure to work with the cast and crew of MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS at @breckenridgebackstagetheatre as my first real professional theatre gig. To commemorate, I made some cool art using every cast and crew member’s favorite song and photos of them from the show by @curtisdevore. Here are my favorites 😊

Happy closing night to the cast and crew of Murder on the Orient Express!!!

They say that the size of the ache is the size of the gift. I know from this show just how true that is because right now the ache in my heart is tremendous. This show and the role of Helen Hubbard has meant more to me than I can put into words.

One of the things that is really hard for me about theatre is how ephemeral it is. We spend so much love and energy creating this wonderful thing and then it is over, never to be recreated. Letting go of that is really hard for me and especially so for this show.

Lots of love and gratitude for those that I got to work with on this amazing train! I hope Mrs. Hubbard both irritated the snot out of you and broke your heart (IYKYK).

“-It suggests more the Latin temperament. Or else it suggests, as our friend the chef de train insisted, a woman.”

Well, Mrs. Christie… it’s a good thing I’m both 💋🚂♥️

So lovely to get this in email form today. Again, so nice to have work validated like this.

“I particularly want to recognize Christopher Marino, who was a wonderful Prospero, portrayed in all his human complexity and depth. He was a commanding presence on the stage, both physically and verbally (so many lines to learn, delivered not like speeches but like natural speech). I found the April 10 interview with Chris by Amanda Gunther of Theatre Bloom, which was extremely helpful for teaching my class - especially his centering the father-daughter relationship of Prospero and Miranda, and Prospero's realization by the end that he needs to give up control. In our last class, I read Chris's description of the communal experience of being in the theatre and the "magic trick of interpreting weird little squiggles on a piece of paper into a living, breathing human being." We all loved that.”

Six shows over four days. I’m tired, but I already miss it and can’t wait to enter the world again this next weekend. Happened upon this part of the review that I missed. It feels validating that what I’m endeavoring to do is communicating. “Christopher Marino plays Prospero not as a cold puppet-master but as a deeply human father, protective, conflicted, and ultimately generous. His command of Shakespeare’s dense verse is matched by a physical ease that makes the character feel real and present rather than theatrical. When he watches from the upper tier of the set as his daughter Miranda begins to fall for Ferdinand — his face cycling through amusement, alarm, and quiet pride — it is one of the most endearing moments of the night. Selah Kreeger brings a luminous innocence to Miranda, her movements light and instinctive, her scenes with Marino radiating an authentic familial bond.” This show is just an absolute pleasure to be part of.
