Sometimes one of these is what brings you to therapy. Other times, they all have been overlapping and feeding into each other for so long that you do not even know what started where. Often, it's the self abandonment that runs through them all.

You do not need to untangle it all before you reach out. That is quite literally what I am here for 🫶

CPTSD does not stop at the memories. Its impact can run through the way you feel, function, connect, see yourself and live.

So therapy cannot stop at processing the memories either.

It has to work with everything the trauma affected.

That is the work of complex trauma therapy 💙

“How do I stop feeling like this?” What if that question is part of the problem?

Sometimes the search for the right tool becomes another way of trying to fix ourselves, especially if struggling, having needs or showing emotion was once met with shame, rejection or punishment.

It makes sense that a part of you learnt to keep going and began treating any part that struggled as the problem to fix.

That same pattern can follow you into therapy. The tools may help you cope, but if they are only used to quieten or correct the parts that struggle, you are still moving away from yourself.

Rebuilding the relationship means turning towards those parts instead. Listening to them. Understanding them. Reconnecting with them and rediscovering yourself in the process.

The tools matter.

But you were always the missing piece. 💜

You can’t always explain your way to a different response.

You can choose your words carefully and someone may still be upset, disagree or carry on as before. That doesn’t automatically mean you’ve explained it badly.

And adding another three paragraphs won’t always be what helps.

If you’ve tried talking and things still aren’t working, you still have choices about how you look after yourself. Even if the other person doesn’t change.

Which of these could you try this week? 💙

If you’re putting pressure on yourself to change quickly, this is for you.

Especially if you’ve spent years suppressing pain or relying on habits that have become automatic.

In therapy, I help you understand what’s driving those patterns. We process what’s behind them and learn different ways to respond.

Then we put those changes into practice in everyday life, giving new habits time to become familiar and established.

Change is possible. Give yourself time to work towards it. 💙

“Oh. That’s why I react like that.”

I love those moments in therapy.

When a reaction you’ve been questioning starts to make sense. You begin to connect what you’ve learnt to expect with how you respond now.

We use that understanding to guide the therapy. We might work on a belief you’ve carried for years or process experiences that still affect you. Alongside that, we practise ways to settle your body and respond differently in the moment.

Which slide had you thinking “that’s me”? 💙

Knowing why you’re reacting doesn’t mean you can just switch it off.

Childhood trauma can affect both your mind and your body. You can tell yourself you’re safe a hundred times and your nervous system may still react as though the danger is right in front of you.

In trauma therapy, we work on helping you feel safer, ground your attention and navigate the anxiety. And through therapies such as EMDR or trauma focused CBT, we can also process the experiences still driving that fear.

Understanding why you’re reacting can take some of the shame out of it, so you’re not also telling yourself off for a fear you learnt long ago.

What if you planned for inconsistency?

If you’ve noticed this cycle, comparing yourself to others can bring shame and keep you searching for a better method. But maybe you’ve already found things that help you relax, and what needs to change is the expectation that you’ll keep using them consistently.

Your interests, needs, availability and capacity can change. Having a menu of options or a hobby box ready means you can choose what suits you that day, with fewer obstacles to getting started.

You might leave something for a while and come back to it when you fancy it again. And maybe “this is it” can mean “this is what works for me today”.

Sometimes ‘sorry’ comes out so automatically that we don’t stop to think whether there’s anything to apologise for.

Therapy is time to work on what matters to you. There’s room for how you feel and express yourself, and for your honest thoughts about what we’re trying. We can keep the sessions focused and work things out together.

This is for you if you feel guilty taking time for yourself or worry that working on yourself makes you selfish.

This isn’t about always putting yourself and your needs above everyone else.

It’s about including yourself in the decisions you make.

Try a small experiment this week. Next time you’re deciding where to eat together, think about what you fancy too and make a suggestion.

Save this. Repeat this. Practice this. 💙

Overthinking can be exhausting. It can add to anxiety and stress, distract you from what you’re doing and use up so much time and energy.

But I hope this helps you understand why you might have learnt to do it. When we understand the reason behind the behaviour, it becomes easier to give ourselves a little more grace for how we’ve coped.

And it helps us work out what actually needs to change. Because if overthinking is the side effect, we need to work on what’s causing it too.

Can it be hard to get started? Yes.

Can it be hard to maintain focus, especially on a high demand or low interest task? Also yes.

Can shifting focus be hard? Absolutely.

But can hyperfocus happen too? Damn right.

That’s why attention deficient really doesn’t tell the full story.

So, tell me... what’s the current hyperfocus? I need details 👀
