CHAIRMAN’S REPORT: MATCH 7 ā˜€ļøšŸ»šŸ

Another excellent game was played in the best of spirits - with a fabulous traditional village cricket tea provided most generously by Michael O’C.

@laughtoncricketclub won the toss and chose to bowl. On a tricky wicket our batters struggled to score. Despite a counter attacking 51 from Toby and a late flurry of boundaries from James (32*), 147 in 40 overs seemed a bit light.

Bread, cheese, ham, strawberries and cream, and chocolate cake might have slowed the team taking the field but well taken catches, a smart run out and a stumping kept things tight. Despite a determined 58 from Chris Hulbert, Laughton fell short at 126 all out.

Matty was the pick of the bowlers (4/37), having kept wicket for the first 20 overs, and Toby, James and Thom each took two excellent catches - Toby sprinting around the boundary and diving forward to grab the ball was a treat as was Thom’s legside diving take off the ever reliable Rohit.

Smart fielding all round was the key - Seb Clemo contributing again with his casual one handed stops! A fine win - well played, Village!

MoM - @matty_deveson - 4/37 and a stumping! šŸ‘ by @selmestoncc

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT - GAME 6

This was a game dominated by two outstanding innings.

SACC won the toss and elected to field. After 30 overs, at 130-5, T Wells seemed headed for a below par score. A tight opening spell from Abdul (1/27) and clever spin bowling by Top Gun Thom (3/49) and Alastair (1/27) restricted the opposition, but T Wells opener Harry Eastergate remained and paced his innings brilliantly. Well supported by skipper Yusuf Thanawala (48), Harry launched a powerful counter attack, carrying his bat for 155*. A superb innings, and despite Toby achieving a thrilling over the shoulder diving catch and taking two late wickets with his ā€˜donkey-drop’ leg spin, T Wells achieved an imposing 248/7.

249 seemed a possible target on a good pitch with a short boundary, but early wickets and tight, controlled bowling put SACC under great pressure. Toby stood firm, however, holding the innings together. He stepped up the pace after the drinks break and with fine support from Ollie Horner (25), they built a platform where 80 runs were needed from the last ten overs.

But... T Wells skipper took responsibility and managed to break a dangerous partnership. Despite Toby’s heroics in scoring 121, the late order couldn’t give him the support he needed.

Congratulations to @tunbridgewellscc for their victory and for playing the game in such excellent spirit. by @selmestoncc

CHAIRMAN’S MATCH REPORT - GAME 5

Cricket is often a game of fine margins, astute judgment and keen decision making.

Last Saturday, morning rain and a poor forecast led to a tough call. With people travelling long distances to get to the game we called it off early at 8.30am. But then at 11.30, East Sussex was blue sky and sunshine and that decision seemed premature… SCG groundstaff were bracing themselves for admonishment. But at 1pm the clouds returned and very soon it was pouring. By 2pm,

The Cricketers was packed with soaking wet disgruntled cricketers from other teams who had travelled across the county only to have their games abandoned. We made the right call. Phew. by @selmestoncc

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT - MATCH 4 šŸā˜€ļø

A stunning last wicket stand of 101 runs by @blackboyscc took a game away from us that had seemed done and dusted...

To our collective relief on another baking hot day, Top Gun won the toss and chose to bat.

Alastair and Sridar started cautiously against some rapid, accurate bowling, but the arrival of Toby at the crease changed the momentum as he smashed five sixes and six fours before being brilliantly caught and bowled for 63. Butch kept up the attack with 54* while Alastair once again anchored the innings with very fine 86*.

232 to win seemed a good target. They say that catches win matches... well, we held everything for 30 overs, eight catches out of the nine wickets that fell, three to Toby, two to Thom, who was as brilliant as ever in the deep, a sharp caught and bowled from Rohit, and at 130 for 9 with ten overs to go, the game seemed won. But perhaps overconfident, perhaps wilting in the heat, fielding errors crept in, catches began to go down, accuracy deserted the bowlers and their number 10 smashed a brilliant 66* to win the game for Blackboys.

On reflection, we did well to get ourselves into a winning position against strong opposition. Just one bit of luck would have given us 30 points. Perhaps it was, ultimately, just not our day!

Man of the Match: AD - 86*, three wickets and a sharp catch at square leg... you just can’t keep Alastair out of the game! šŸ‘

Well played @blackboyscc - see you next time! by @selmestoncc

MATCH 3 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Another excellent game against a very sporting opposition.Ā šŸ‘ā˜€ļø

Nutley won the toss and wisely chose to bat on a baking hot day!Ā Our early bowling was wayward and NutleyĀ tookĀ fullĀ advantage reaching a very strong position at 150-3. But Captain Thom held two consecutive catches in the deep and Alastair turned one square to complete a fabulous hat-trick!

Thom held a third excellent catch, young Seb catching two more andĀ Nutley were all out for 189, Alastair finishing with 6/40. A terrific effort in the heat and a great comeback by committed fielders one and all, particularlyĀ Clements & Son and the ever dependable Roadrunner Rohit. Full of confidence, we set off in pursuit. But Matty was caught out in the first over and Butch, due in at three, had mysteriously disappeared... Thom went in instead and was done by a low bounce.

Butch reappeared from his commune with nature but, after a promising start, fell to a good catch. The Nutley bowler punched the air and screamed, ā€œthat’s the game, right there!’.Ā Indeed, atĀ 35/3 we looked to be facing a tough afternoon,Ā but Alastair held firmandĀ Abdul got the innings moving, hitting 5 maximums in his 51 and the target seemed to be in reach. Sridar (25)Ā built a solid partnership with Alaistair, butĀ Nutley posted everyone on the boundary andĀ strangledĀ the innings, Paul CarterĀ conceding just 10 runs in his nine overs. With 17 needed off the final over there was a glimmer of hope when Alastair smashed a six, willing it over the boundary, screaming at the ball as it passed just over the fielder’s oustretched hands. Next ball was hit deep, and Alastair set off for the two runs he needed to keep the strike.Ā But,Ā after a tremendous effort in the heat,Ā pace, never his strongest point, deserted him and a good throw ran him out for a well crafted 64.

With 10 needed off five balls theĀ Professor, last week’s hero, strode in andĀ swung hard... and missed. Then, despite brave swishes of the bat from Ciaran and Rohit, weĀ fell justĀ short.Ā But 15 points is not a bad return. Alastair generously purveying rehydration with jugs of Harvey’s for both teams. šŸ» taken in Selmeston & Alciston Cricket Club by @selmestoncc

MATCH 2 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT šŸšŸ‘“šŸ‘“

@westfieldcricketclub and Selmeston & Alciston are familiar opponents. Subsequently, a friendly and humorous atmosphere persisted throughout the game, despite a close contest and a very tense finish. Both sides playing in the true spirit of village cricket.

Westfield won the toss and elected to bat. Despite a dry pitch offering some assistance to the opening bowlers, the batters got off to a flying start. However a mix up leading to a run out began a slow collapse, our bowlers making use of the conditions to restrict Westfield to 128 all out, Prof taking 3/40, Abdul 2/11, Captain Thom 2/17, and new recruit Sri taking 2/14, Chandu contributing with tidy work behind the stumps - a run out, catch and two smart stumpings.

The SACC chase began disastrously. If things looked disappointing at 23/3, despite a decent partnership between Abdul (29) and Captain Thom (21), 69/5 looked bleak. A sixth wicket soon followed and with batters 9,10 & 11 all less than occasional cricketers, everything rested on the two Tims, Huntley and Marriott. Years of experience were put to the test as Westfield bowled tight and fielded like demons. But, agonisingly slowly, the score crept up - a very nervous Nick Collett, having played once in the last 50 years, pacing up and down as he waited to come in next. But frustration began to take its toll on the bowlers and a few short deliveries were put away to the boundary and a great game of competitive cricket, laced with a few comedy moments, appropriately came to an end when a stray delivery hit the keepers helmet on the ground behind him, delivering 5 penalty runs for us to win the game.

So we headed to the New Inn, replaying the big moments of the game over a few well-earned pints. A great day.

MATCH 1 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT šŸā˜€ļøšŸ»

A flawless blue sky day greeted the teams at the SCG for the opening fixture of the season. The sun shone warmly as SACC faced @herstmonceuxcc, a friendly foe for the first game. The ā€˜Ceux are a very well-run club and play the game in the right spirit.

Captain Thom was unlucky at the toss, and we were sent in to bat first.

The batting proved challenging on a typical early season wicket, making scoring runs difficult, but Toby anchored the innings with a composed knock of 62. Contributions from James, Alastair and fine new recruit Ciaran added crucial runs, allowing us to reach a total of 162 from our 40 overs.

Tea and cake were enjoyed by players and spectators alike and then SACC took to the field. Herstmonceux’s openers started strongly, but Abdul shifted the momentum with two quick wickets. Matty then dismantled the middle order, and we remarkably held on to our catches, paving the way for Captain Thom’s outstanding spell of mystery spin, taking five wickets for just seven runs, and Herstmonceux were bowled out for 82.

With 30 points in the bag for us, both teams made their way to the Cricketers pub and everyone enjoyed a cheerful and amicable evening, indulging in Harvey’s beer and cheesy chips together. A very encouraging start to the season!

Another fantastic Saturday last weekend: in cold & blustery conditions (swipe šŸ‘‰šŸ¼ to see @reginasuddahazai modelling her best ā€œchilly Bernie Sanders of cricketā€ look), we set a very healthy target of 268 to earn the win against a strong @pevenseycc side.

It now takes our record to 4 straight wins to start the season. šŸ™ŒšŸ¼

Some key highlights, written with flourish and signature penmanship in our skipper Dan Brown’s (@danielmbb) match report -> shortened extracts below for the caption limit:

(1) Opening [for the first time! šŸ‘šŸ¼], Rahul hit a whirlwind 40 from just 28 deliveries, punctuated by four towering sixes, bringing much-needed warmth to the shivering spectators at square leg.

(2) Toby, played an innings of classical beauty: an
elegant 62, forged with timing rather than force, comprising
11 sumptuous boundaries, many through the covers with a
late flourish that would have brought a smile to Colin
Cowdrey. šŸ’«

(3) Thom Moore, in the form of his life, compiled a sparkling 87,
peppered with 14 fours and two sixes, played with an ease
and fluency that made light of the swirling gale. Rarely
does a batsman look so unhurried while scoring so freely. šŸ‘ŒšŸ¼
One such well-timed shot was captured from the Square Leg POV - šŸ‘‰šŸ¼ see Slide No. 3!

(4) Matt Butcher provided fireworks of a different kind, carving 45 from 30 balls, including four sixes and three fours. One particularly imperious six over long-on was followed by a theatrical pose—held aloft for three or four seconds—as the ball
sailed into the Pevensey wind. It was, one might say, a
celebration both deliberate and entirely deserved.

(5) [Onto bowling] Regina’s figures speak for themselves: 9 overs, 1 maiden, 26 runs, 2 wickets—a spell of control and guile in trying conditions. A special mention must be made of Tim Huntley’s (@timhuntley) spell—a vintage exhibition of medium pace bowling, aided by the elements but defined by precision. Four wickets, taken during a spell that reduced Pevensey from 71 for 4 to 73 for 7, broke the match open. 🫔

(6) And what about our fielding?: šŸ‘‰šŸ¼ see Slide No. 4!

Onto our next match tomorrow vs @heathfieldparkcc at the iconic SCG (Selmeston Cricket Ground). šŸ˜Ž taken in Pevensey & Westham Recreation ground by @selmestoncc

Last Saturday’s match was almost too surreal for words: an intense low-scoring thriller against @laughtoncricketclub - where a shared 20 wickets fell for just 102 runs…

Despite an admirable effort from our oppo, including 5 consecutive maidens in one spell by Adrian Breeds, we came out on top.

šŸ’„ Again, a stellar match-winning performance by our Top Gun (and skipper on the day) Thom Moore - shown here being presented the match ball by our club Chairman Prof Tim Huntley - who himself got 4 for 9!
šŸ’« Topping the League’s Bowling Honours Board: 6 wickets for 3 runs off 6 overs. 🤯

šŸ‘‰šŸ¼ Swipe to see the beautiful weather on the day at Laughton’s beautiful ground; and an ecstatic SACC team pinching themselves at the end of the day!

Looking forward to playing @pevenseycc tomorrow. Whatever the forecasts may say, here’s hoping for another sunny day of cricket! ā˜€ļø taken in Laughton Cricket Club by @selmestoncc

As we have another beautiful Saturday of league cricket coming up today; just a moment to reflect on a top-notch start to the season so far:

šŸ‘‰šŸ¼ An unbeaten 200+ partnership between our ā€œTop Gunā€ Thom Moore (110* + mention on the Sussex Honours Board) & Rahul ā€œStannerzā€ Karuppannan (83* incl. five 6’s)

šŸ‘‰šŸ¼ Continued batting prowess in our second game with the early-season bar set high by Toby (100), Thom (69), and Alastair (54)

šŸš€ Two wins to kick off our 2025 campaign. Now, onto the next one! taken in Selmeston & Alciston Cricket Club by @selmestoncc
