Images of ARNALDO BAPTISTA’S drawings shown at TRANSIT 001 exhibition for the first time in the United States . Arnaldo Baptista is renowned for his profound influence on Brazilian and international music, first as the founder and leader of Os Mutantes, and later through a solo career spanning from 1973 to the present. Beginning in the 1980s, Baptista devoted himself increasingly to the Visual Arts, developing a practice that had been present alongside his music since the 1970s. Arnaldo’s visual art reflects the philosophy, poetry, humor, and avant-garde sensibility that have long defined his musical work. Spontaneous and experimental, his paintings and drawings embrace the fantastic, moving between psychedelia, metaphysics, and contemporary art. His use of color and texture, together with his relationship to language and the written word, creates images that feel at once raw, poetic, and intensely personal — like fragments of a strange and vivid fable. About the show: TRANSIT brings together artists working across different generations, geographies, and practices—not to compare origins, but to observe what becomes visible when works are allowed to coexist. Postal works circulate through time. Sculptures assembled from fragments of Rio de Janeiro find themselves beside objects gathered in New York City sidewalks. Painters who arrived through music discover unexpected neighbors. These affinities are not presented as conclusions. They are propositions. Whether these relations are found or made remains unresolved. This the inaugural exhibition of Olia (@oliaesp), an artist-run media platform from NYC and São Paulo, Brazil dedicated to documenting artistic practice and fostering dialogue across disciplines.
