hot dip galv mild steel plate, welded joins
(reverse order)

I’ve been playing with these flexy plate chairs recently. Previously limited to single seat only. When BENCHED popped up, given the size and sale price constraint, I knew this was the concept for it. The fab is fast. The impact is big.

Having only explored single seats, I didn’t know whether rocking in unison would work, but it did. As good or if not better than imagined. It was so special encouraging pairs to have a seat and I believe the term was ‘put your ass into it’. I witnessed so much surprise and joy.

There’s probably an angle where I could focus on the beauty that was the small act of syncing your movements with your friend, exchanging eye contact and joyous expressions, and how that blissful movement momentarily had your entire focus, but I won’t do that… by @semplestuff

Imagine enjoying hanging out your washing

I could genuinely write an essay about this clothes horse, It’s the perfect metaphor for an uncomfortable feeling that’s been gradually building within me.

Not about how we aimed to make it pretty enough to double as wall art when folded up.

Not about its highly considered features and materials. You can already see most of them. Maybe not the bearings in the pivot point...

Not about how I designed this specifically to work with the brick pattern and mortar joints.

Not about how unlike every other clothes horse, this is made with nothing but longevity and user experience in mind.

But how, it is the basic, considered objects like this, that will improve your quality of life. Not the fucking touchscreens, wifi connectivity and proprietary apps.

I’m going to go out on a whim, and assume I’m not the only one feeling… It. Feeling like life is getting harder, despite the technological advancements of the last two decades.

Decades ago, technological advancements truly meant an increased convenience, improved quality of life and a positive impact on your everyday.

Now I feel it’s just a pissing contest and marketing veil designed to dupe us into replacing something that already worked fine.

No, our washing machines do not need wifi.

To be perfectly clear, I despise certain aspects of our modern world and have made it my imperative to strip back and question the importance of what exists in my little bubble. Whilst simultaneously replacing my items with things that bring me joy to use and even just to look at.

Let me tell you, it’s working. The objects that surround me, serve me, they work for me, they look shit hot and they actually make my life better.

Maybe it’s a bit of stretch relating this back to the clothes horse. Maybe I just wanted an excuse to say some of what’s been plaguing my mind, publicly. I have a feeling I’m not the only one.

And of course, if you’d like one of these in your home, get in touch. Find that perfect wall space and we’ll customise the dimensions to suit. I’ll be putting together a price this week, stay tuned. by @semplestuff

Placed 8/25

These components are test bends from another project. With their form as constraint, I set out to make something nice. It took me a while to place them, any form that had the ‘legs’ facing out, felt wrong. One day I stacked them (2,3,4), finally it felt right, the parts were placed. by @semplestuff

Offie table 001 | circa 8/25
the first exploration into a new process - a unique material arrangement and manufacturing method.

1,2 - finished but uncoated
3,4 - process feat. Tommy
5 - so fresh it was still warm
6 - fab plans
7 - powder w/ mirror
8 - add smokey glass
9 - whisk till fluffy
10,11 - where it resides today 24/8/26
12 - where it started

I was sketching and exploring this somewhat unrelated design (using a waste solar panel as a table surface) when the offie concept came to me - I could use small sections of square tube, to form a mesh that has depth. See if you can find the notes and scribbles that lead me that way.

Like all of my favourite works, Offie is a byproduct of giving my brain the time and space to play with and fully immerse myself in an idea, reaching that blissful, hyper-fixated state of mind. Which I find very hard in this fast paced world that’s littered with distraction...

Even the whole offcut aspect. I didn’t set out with altruistic intentions to find a way to reuse offcuts. It revealed itself, as my mind wandered.

Whilst a lot of my work is utilitarian, where I start with the purpose and work out the most economical processes to achieve it with style. @semplesolutions

There’s another prominent set of work, where I do the opposite. Where process drives the purpose. I don’t set out to make a certain thing - ie table, chair. I dream up a unique manufacturing process or material arrangement and let that process, dictate the final form.

Vern (sun lounge) is another example of this. by @semplestuff

When Vern went to the flinders.
Got that? It’s Vern, not Vernon. It’s always felt weird saying Vernon a loud. We only ever called him Vern. I don’t know why I called it Vernon. To be fancy or something… by @semplestuff

‘Share’ 7/25
Until recently I thought I had no ‘style’
No unique design language
No repeat bill of materials
Which is partially true
But with all this obsessive making
Im starting to see a pattern

My works consistently explore material arrangements and engineering limits. The ‘share’ chair, doesn’t get its structure in a traditional way. Each section of 6mm rod and accompanying dainty welds, share its own load. It is the cumulative strength that makes it feasible.

Something something I was inspired by the loss of community in the modern era and wanted to portray what was possible if we all do our bit or some bs like that by @semplestuff

Illegal dump turned chair
I walk George here and it’s really pretty
All but the trash from grubs
I hate waste
So when I saw this pile, I had an idea
Worst case, I clean up a pile of trash
Best case, it turns into something worthwhile
Which I think it did…
I set out to design a chair that
used as much material as possible
lessening what I have to get rid of

Another book down, 22’ to 26’

My sketch books have always been a direct reflection of my creativity, and In turn, my overall well being. This book took a long time to fill, and there’s a reason.

I lost my way around 2020, this book represents my personal journey, rediscovering myself. And my relationship with design is at the heart of it. A coexistence I wouldn’t have any other way.

In 22’ I remember not having a book on the go at all, which was frankly, heart breaking. No book, no ideas, no closer to my dream. So, I made the effort to draw again.

It’s pretty wild thinking back to that time, where I’d all but lost something so special to me, and now we’re here, where design and I share a flourishing relationship.

Here are a few of my fav sketches, some have come to fruition, some not. I can’t wait to find out what the next book will hold.

Big love to my sister for gifting the leather cover way back. As with anything worth having, it only gets better with age. by @semplestuff

6mm coat hangers
That’s the natural maker progression right
Chair, table, coat hangers…

I’ve learnt a lot about my relationship with design in the last year. Where my passions lie. A big one is doing justice to the basic items, we interact with everyday. Making them not shit and soulless.

In this modern era, we’ve all had to accept a pitiful level of quality in the products sold to us. Right across the board.

Maybe I’m sensitive to it, but every interaction, with every object throughout your day, cumulates. Whether good, or bad. When that thing fuc… annoys you a little bit just by using it. It stacks up. We don’t need any extra stressors.

That’s why I’m slowly filling my life with stuff that brings me joy to use. Stuff that’s made right. by @semplestuff
