A remarkable conservation retreat | Ibiti Project 🌿

Just four hours from Rio de Janeiro in Minas Gerais, tucked into the foothills of Brazil’s Mantiqueira Mountains, Ibiti Project offers something truly extraordinary, a 6,000-hectare wilderness where exceptional hospitality meets pioneering conservation and community regeneration.

This inspiring project is dedicated to restoring the natural landscape, protecting endangered wildlife and supporting local communities through reforestation, re-wilding and sustainable development.

Guests can choose from three distinctive accommodation experiences. Ibiti Village offers beautifully restored traditional houses within the charming hillside community of Mogol, while Engenho Lodge, a sophisticated 18th-century farmhouse, combines historic character with luxurious comfort. For those seeking complete seclusion, the Remote concept offers four wonderfully rustic houses immersed in nature.

Days here are spent exploring spectacular waterfalls, hidden caves, pristine Atlantic rainforest and more than 300km of trails. From guided hikes and horse riding to electric biking, yoga and restorative spa treatments, there are endless opportunities to reconnect with the natural world.

At the heart of Ibiti’s conservation work is the remarkable Muriqui House, dedicated to protecting and reintroducing the critically threatened woolly spider monkey, the largest primate in the Americas. Working alongside the Muriqui Biodiversity Institute, the project has achieved a world first with the birth of a baby muriqui in captivity.

Beyond wildlife conservation, Ibiti is equally committed to preserving local culture, supporting education and creating lasting opportunities for the surrounding communities.

For those seeking an experience that goes far beyond a traditional luxury stay, Ibiti Project is a truly special destination where nature, conservation, culture and thoughtful hospitality come together.

A Giant River otter family play and fish in front of us at Cocha Camungo. This is the largest of the world’s 13 otter species, found only in South America, eating over 4 kgs of fish every day - they especially love piranhas 🐟. Giant river otters are a key bio indicator of water quality, an umbrella species and simply extraordinary and fascinating. An endangered species, hunted for their skin and at risk especially through habitat loss @ecotone.eco @crees.manu @senderospartners @jesus_glhemm by @senderospartners

Historic charm and coastal beauty | Pousada Literária 🌿

In the heart of Brazil’s enchanting colonial town of Paraty, Pousada Literária offers a beautiful blend of history, culture and understated luxury.

With just 28 elegant suites and villas, combining contemporary comfort with traditional Brazilian character, this charming retreat is set around lush tropical gardens and a beautiful central swimming pool, a peaceful sanctuary just moments from Paraty’s historic streets.

Beyond the hotel, guests can wander through cobbled lanes lined with colourful colonial buildings, explore the surrounding mountains and Atlantic Forest, or take to the water to discover the secluded islands and pristine beaches of the spectacular Bay of Paraty.

Once a thriving port for Brazil’s gold and coffee trade, Paraty was largely forgotten when new trading routes emerged, leaving much of its remarkable colonial architecture beautifully preserved. Today, its historic centre and the surrounding Atlantic Forest form part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Paraty and Ilha Grande region.

Ideally positioned between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Pousada Literária makes a wonderful addition to a Brazilian itinerary, offering the perfect balance of cultural discovery, natural beauty and relaxed sophistication.

🌾🌾🌾. Today we walked with Javier Farje to the Mausoleum of La Petaca, along a rugged, remote and beautiful route south of Leymebamba. Amid canyons and aromatic and medicinal herbs, we listened to his stories about the history of this land and his own experiences, the myths, legends, customs and beliefs passed down from generation to generation. Before the imposing mountain, a Chachapoya burial site, we imagined the citadels, the crops and the exchanges between the peoples of the coast and the rainforest before the arrival of the Incas. An extraordinary day. (4-hour hike — moderate difficulty) by @senderospartners

Have you heard of maned wolves? I never had before a recent visit to Brazil – they’re the supermodels of the savannah, with their pencil-thin legs, longer than any other canids on the planet, and found only in South America.

This one crosses ahead of us, as graceful as a ballerina stepping onto a stage, whilst we’re out with the NGO Onçafari, which protects these striking animals.

We’re staying at Pousada Trijunção, an intimate eco-lodge, far from any town, reached by a long, red-earth track into the Cerrado - one of the Earth’s most biodiverse savannahs.

My story on this trip has just published in the Marlowe Review, a beautiful online magazine - I’m thrilled with their layout and my pictures which they’ve chosen. They can be found on substack as well as online. @marlowereview @senderospartners @naomisenderos @oncafari @pousadatrijuncao #brazil #manedwolf by @senderospartners
