I just let myself get lost in the creative process with this one. 🤎

It started with a loaf of bread at the center of the story, and the idea of trying to make a jointed mohair bear for a very special first birthday. Then, little by little, the rest came to life - a birthday crown (of course), a bag of flour, a bread basket… one idea leading to the next.

I never really know if I can make something until I try. This one was labor intensive but so rewarding a the end.

Making of Baker Bear Part 3: the flour bag.

Before Cecilia was born, I remember telling Ryan “They say every child is born with a loaf under their arm”. Which means that with every child, good fortune comes too.

And then, not long after we brought Cecilia home, we opened our front door and found a loaf of homemade bread waiting on our doorstep by @saraheisenbe (who was also pregnant with Stella at that time) and Richart.

It felt like the sweetest sign from heaven!

So I made Stella a baker bear to remember a simple gesture that meant so much to us. It was also a reminder of how I want to show up for others postpartum. That loaf of bread really tasted like the best loaf I had ever had (I mean it was from @seawolfbakers so no surprise there). by @sendinjames

Earlier this year, I made Stella a bear 🧸

A tiny jointed mohair Baker Bear, made slowly by hand from a Polka Dot Club pattern.

Stella’s family and we have had a little history with bread since before she was born, and of course somehow it became part of our friendship 🥖 , our gifts and our inside jokes. So when I started thinking about something special I could make for her for her first birthday, of course it had to begin with a baker.

I cut every tiny piece, stitched him together, stuffed him, jointed his little arms and legs, and watched this funny little pile of mohair slowly become someone.

But a baker can’t just be a bear. Stay tuned to see part2 & 3 of this special project.

I still remember the day I discovered Coat of Many Colors.

I grew up far away from Tennessee, but as a teenager, I spent hours watching your concerts and old live performances. I loved the songs, but I also loved the big hair, the rhinestones, the humor, the warmth, the stories, and that American world that surrounded you.

You made it fascinating to me.

Long before I ever imagined building a life in America, you made me curious about it. You made me fall in love with a culture from afar, not just its music, but also its places and stories, through your magical storytelling.

And somehow, that faraway world eventually became part of my own life.

I went from listening to your CDs thousands of miles away to visiting Tennessee, driving two hours around Pigeon Forge to find the little cabin where you grew up, and visiting Dollywood twice (once without realizing it was closed). Places that had existed only in songs and stories suddenly became real.

At our wedding reception, Ryan and I sang “Islands in the Stream” together and now, all these years later, every month I open a book from your Imagination Library that gets sent to us for my daughter.

The woman whose stories opened up such a big, fascinating world for me when I was young is now, in a completely different way, helping to open up the world for my baby with books like “The little engine that could” 😭.

I am realizing that through your music and your stories, you played a small but crucial part in leading me toward the life I have today.

Thank you, Dolly 🦋. I will always love you.

Can you actually die of cuteness? Because I might be close.

I get her toys and objects that I would want to play with too.

Because I believe the toys and clothes I choose for her shouldn’t be an afterthought. I want her to grow up surrounded by objects and an environment that foster creativity, engage her senses and support her development.

Most of the things she plays with today are things she’s had since she was a newborn. It’s been so fun to see how the way she interacts with the same objects keeps evolving as she grows. Something that was once just something to hold or put in her mouth now becomes part of a little story or a game.

We’ll slowly add things over time, but they’ll live alongside the ones she already has as part of the same little world.

I try to choose natural materials and objects rooted in reality. I like toys that don’t expire or age out, but grow with her. And also not a single use toy that will engage her for 10 seconds and then ignore. Things that she keeps reaching over and over.

And this is my own rule: if there’s an object in my home that overwhelms me or that I secretly hate… it’s probably not great for a young child either, even if they seem entertained by it.

Thank you @poppy_bloom_ for sharing your talents with us. We will care and treasure them forever 🤍🧸 by @sendinjames

“What is it?”
Anything you want it to be.

No instructions.
No batteries.
No single purpose.

Just an object waiting for a child.

In her hands it becomes a pocket treasure, a bundle, a bed, a blanket, a secret place. Each day something new.

Open-ended play lets imagination lead, and every child writes a different story 🧶
