Everything carried.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

this is a song in progress :: originally recorded to a beautiful beat by brother @erekeyzmusic about three years ago :: I kept thinking about it (especially since May 24th marks Eritrea’s Independence Day) so I decided to remake it with a new beat and feel…

will release it in full and mixed (it is mad rough right now). Needless to say, I am not a singer (lol), but I love melodies so I just go at it with whatever voice I can muster.

The lyrics:

the pain and the gain on our dome like a halo
fly like a lilo / but humble so we lay low
Hope is the ammo / grit is the m.o.
our fabric on the line / holding like aspilo

bend if we have to / but we ain’t about to fold
the truth is in the flow / mine until it is told
they glitter for the shine / they chase it for the dough
we do it for the soul / it is forever kinda glow
nomadic sou with that back home flow
glisten and glow like zeiti on my ‘fro
but it is all about the soul
like Yemane Barya’a nastro

our selamta got the sweetest melodies
Our wega’Hta: justice and peace
our zanta: waiting for us to release
our qanza: waiting for us….to release

————//———-

Selamta = greetings
Wega’Hta = dawn
Zanta = story/history
Qanza = pain
Zeiti = oil

Yemanè Barya’a nastro = Yemanè Barya’s tape (Google him if you don’t know the legend :)) by @senifalna

I created Keenfolk Reads out of a love for our stories, and a wish to make them easier to find. It brings together books from Africa and its diaspora…some that feel like home, others that introduce us to lives beyond our own.

This is one of my baby projects :) I’m happy to share this with you. I hope you find a story that stays with you.

ps. the beautiful hook on @blackstarkeepshining ‘s “Thieves In The Night” (used on this reel as background music) is inspired by a quote from Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye”.

Horn Signal is built for those of us who follow news from the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea with people and places we love in mind. Sometimes “keeping up” means seventeen open tabs and absolutely no peace of mind.

It brings together events, sources, maps and possible paths ahead to help us understand what’s happening, how it connects and what remains uncertain. When you care about the region, those distinctions matter.

This is an ongoing project, shaped by my own questions and, hopefully, yours. I’m refining it as I go, and your feedback and corrections are welcome.
