This piece, “The ʻoʻopu journey,” was inspired by Mānoa Valley and University of Hawai’i at Mānoa Natural Resources and Environmental Management Department @uhnrem

The left side of the painting portrays a modern day ahupuaʻa system, while the right side reflects my interpretation of a traditional ahupuaʻa. This artwork highlights the current challenges of land and water stewardship while honoring the native ecosystems and wisdom of Hawai’i.

ʻoʻopu, featured in the center of the piece, are native Hawaiian gobies. Their life cycle requires both fresh and salt water. After hatching in streams, their larvae move down stream to the ocean for several months and will eventually return upstream to reach their adulthood stages. These fish are DOPE…they climb up waterfalls using their fused pelvic fins that act as natural suction cups. LOL.

The ʻoʻopu journey is featured in this piece to remind us that ecological health is interconnected, and when streams are blocked by diversions or altered by human development, all life forms, not just ʻoʻopu, will suffer. The health of our upland forests is directly related to the health of our coastal ecosystems. From mauka to makai, every part of the system matters.

🌀 I’m hopeful this piece can bridge the gap between education and awareness. It is not just artwork, it is a call to action (to recognize our shared responsibility and to return to ʻāina). by @sequoiaraynecreations
