This is a collab between my friend @sequoiaraynecreations and I :)
Go scope her art!!
She found me over a year ago and thought to send me a canvas roll through the mail to collaborate on.
The idea of collaborating with a stranger in a different part of the world was such a cool idea and Im glad you decided to send this to me, coming back to Hawaii soon!

🎨 Featured Artwork: “The ʻoʻopu journey” by Sequoia 🩵🌱

Now available as prints in our gift shop ✨ This powerful piece reflects the connection from mauka to makai, highlighting the delicate balance of our ecosystems and the journey of native ʻoʻopu.

Inspired by Mānoa and a blend of traditional and modern ahupuaʻa systems, Sequoia shares this work as a call to action, reminding us of our shared kuleana to care for ʻāina.🌿

Sequoia writes “The ‘o’opu journey is featured in this piece to remind us that ecological health is interconnected, and when streams are blocked by diversions or altered by human development, all life forms, not just ‘o’opu, will suffer. The health of our upland forests is directly related to the health of our coastal ecosystems. From mauka to makai, every part of the system matters.”

Stop by to support local art and bring a piece of the Arboretum home 💚

My tio Victor was painting long before I even knew what painting was. Early on he was always an artistic inspiration. I was so stoked when he asked me to help collaborate on this piece he had started

And @creative_floww for the last one! I have another bigger mandala piece she left me before leaving to Europe as well! This this is the first of 2

I’ve been sitting on these for a little while I apologize it took me so long to start 😅

In her painting of the traditional Hawaiian ahupuaʻa system soon to be displayed in the Sherman Laboratory, NREM student Sequoia Quigley (c/o ‘26) emphasizes the importance of natural resource management. From mauka to makai, the stream separates visions of Hawaiʻi with and without Malama ʻĀina. Environmental stewards define the scene on the right side of the painting, while the left hints at a future without them. The inspiration for this painting is rooted in the comparison of the past and present land management systems in Hawaiʻi, and how NREM supports efforts to build pilina with our ʻāina and communities, furthering a sustainable Hawaiʻi.

“During my painting process, I had a love/hate relationship with the piece. After talking to local community members and other NREM students and faculty, it helped me to improve my work along the way. I was able to apply the knowledge Iʻve learned in my NREM courses,” Quigley said. “Art has the power to educate people and has inspired me to create more environmental art.”
