Celebrating 38 years of restoration

On 28 September 1988, the Society for Ecological Restoration was founded. Today, SER connects more than 5,200 members across 130+ countries, united by a commitment to restoring ecosystems and building a healthier future for people and nature.

From local projects to global partnerships, our community has come a long way, and there’s still so much more to do.

Thank you to the members, volunteers, partners, and supporters who make SER’s work possible. Here’s to 38 years of learning, connecting, and restoring, and to many more years to come!

The third edition of the SER Standards is now available.

The conversation has shifted from why to how. The new edition of the International Principles and Standards for the Practice of Ecological Restoration brings more rigorous measurement, clearer performance thresholds, expanded guidance across the full project cycle, and a stronger emphasis on Indigenous Knowledge and the people involved in and affected by restoration.

Read or download it, and join the authors for a virtual launch on 24 September. Link in bio or at www.ser.org/serstandards.

Module 1 of SER's new Foundations of Restoration Ecology course is now available!

Built for practitioners, students, and anyone drawn to restoration, the course lays the scientific groundwork for effective, evidence-based work. Module 1 covers the core concepts: ecosystem change, climate cycles, ecological resilience, and how to assess restoration outcomes with reliable data.

Free and self-paced, with an optional certificate on completion of all three modules. Modules 2 and 3 follow later this year.

Start Module 1 free. Link in bio or at www.ser.org/mooc

Indigenous seed networks are playing a growing role in ecological restoration, biodiversity conservation, and biocultural knowledge stewardship. Join SER’s International Network for Seed-based Restoration (INSR) for an interactive panel webinar with practitioners and experts from Brazil, Kenya, Tanzania, and the United States, exploring Indigenous leadership in seed collection, conservation, banking, and use in restoration. Designed as a conversation rather than formal presentations, this 90-minute session is a chance to learn from diverse experiences and consider how restoration practitioners and organizations can better support Indigenous-led seed stewardship.

Long Point is the longest freshwater peninsula in the world, and a decade of restoration has brought it back from one of Ontario's most aggressive invasive plants.

Our latest Restoration Story follows the Nature Conservancy of Canada's invasive Phragmites work at Long Point, a Ramsar wetland and World Biosphere Reserve and habitat for more than 88 species at risk. After the peninsula became 40 percent covered by the plant, NCC and its partners treated it at a landscape scale through a coalition of more than 30 organisations. As the Phragmites was removed, native species returned, including Fowler's toads and wild rice, and the birds followed.

Story submitted by the Nature Conservancy of Canada @ncc_cnc.

From grasslands to coastlines, restoration is advancing across the Asia-Pacific.

Join SER for a webinar featuring three projects in Australia, South Korea, and New Zealand, supported through collaboration between SER, Microsoft, and local partners: native grassland restoration in Melbourne using a "cap and sow" model, volunteer-led invasive species control and native reseeding in Korea's Umyeonsan Mountain forests, and community-based wetland, saltmarsh, and coastal forest restoration at Harbourview Ōrangihina in Auckland.

Speakers will share the ecological and cultural context of their sites and the lessons from sustained restoration work.

7 or 8 October depending on your timezone. Register at the link in bio or at www.ser.org/serwebinars.
