Sergei Tcherepnin

Sergei Tcherepnin (b. 1981, Boston, USA) works with sound, musical scores, sculpture and performance, to create environments in which listening becomes an unpredictable experience. Known for research-driven, multi-channel installations, he creates immersive constellations, where meaning unfolds through atmosphere and activation. At our current exhibition ‘Lebt und arbeitet in Wien’, Tcherepnin presents ‘Birds’ (2026), two sculptures that employ light and sound, playing sequences from songs of different male pairs of the kōkako – an endangered bird endemic to New Zealand. Kōkako pairs can be male-female or same-sex; their duet serving not only to mark and defend a territory, but to form and maintain partnerships. In his sculptures, Tcherepnin uses a mixture of synthesized kōkako voices, combined with archival recordings from the 1990s, which were captured by Jeff McLeod as part of his research on the differences between the song of male and female same sex pairs.

Sergei Tcherepnin (geb. 1981, Boston, USA) arbeitet mit Klang, musikalischen Notationen, Skulptur und Performance und schafft Umgebungen, in denen das Hören zu einer unvorhersehbaren Erfahrung wird. Seine künstlerische Praxis hat ihren Ursprung in forschungsorientierten, mehrkanaligen Installationen, die Ton, Objekte und Bilder zu mitunter immersiven Konstellationen verbinden, in denen sich die Bedeutung durch Atmosphäre und Interaktion entfaltet. In der Kunsthalle Wien präsentiert Tcherepnin „Birds“ (2026), zwei Skulpturen, die mit dem Einsatz von Licht und Sound arbeiten und Sequenzen aus den Gesängen verschiedener männlicher Paare des Kōkako – eines bedrohten, in Neuseeland endemischen Vogels – wiedergeben. Tcherepnin has developed a performance for modular synthesizer and keyboard based on his exhibition Miracle of Love originally shown at Twinkler, Vienna. The work was originally composed for a floor covered in 20,000 recycled ball pit balls. The composition is made from “Love Frequencies” and subharmonic sequences. The composition in the room was meant to be felt as much as it was heard.

Sergei Tcherepnin is an artist whose practice spans music, visual art and performance. His installations and performances bring together sound and image through tapping in to the sculptural possibilities of sound. His works for modular synthesizer create dreamy new worlds that are tactile and psychological. Having studied with and worked for artist Maryanne Amacher, his work carries on her legacy of composing for a “perceptual geography,” developing the interplay within a single work between the ways in which one receives and processes music. Tcherepnin has performed at venues in NY such as Blank Forms, Roulette, The Stone, Guggenheim Museum, Transpecos, Issue Project Room, and the Kitchen. He has been in group exhibitions at the Whitney Biennial, Greater New York at PS1, the 30th São Paulo Biennial, Museum of Modern Art; Pavilion of Georgia at the 55th Venice Biennale. Solo exhibitions have been held at Murray Guy (New York), Foksal Gallery (Warsaw), Company Gallery (New York), Overduin and Co (LA), Karma International (Zurich). Recent performances and exhibitions include Miracle of Love at Presshouse (Vienna) and Issue Project Room (New York), Sub at Twinkler (Vienna); Cloud Babies, Night Babies as part of the Japanese Pavillion in the Venice Biennale; and Birds as part of the group exhibition Lebt und Arbeitet in Wien, Kunsthalle Wien. His music for Fern Silva’s film Rock Bottom Riser won Best Original Music at Cinéma du Réel at the Pompidou in 2021. by @sergeitcherepnin

Thursday, October 1st at 8pm, ISSUE presents an entirely new work for Serge Modular synthesizer by 2012 AIR Sergei Tcherepnin. Developed by the artist’s uncle, Serge Tcherepnin, in 1973, the Serge Modular continues to inform Tcherepnin’s work across sound, sculpture, and live performance.

The piece unfolds as an intense urban landscape where densely layered harmonies collide with shimmering noise. Odd tonal patterns emerge, dissolve, and recombine in unexpected ways, building on the artist’s longstanding interest in the material and psychological effects of sound.

2026 Fall programs are curated by Zev Greenfield. This program is also made possible, in part, by support from the Austrian Cultural Forum.
