I have been thinking about launching a podcast for nearly two years, and I have finally decided to build it.

What It Took is a podcast, storytelling platform, and book project created to explore the unfiltered truth behind building something impactful.

This is not a highlight reel, and it is not generic business advice. It is about the real journey behind what gets built, the pivots, pressure, failures, lessons, and defining moments that shape the path.

Hosted by Serisha Barrat — tech entrepreneur, founder, speaker, and builder.

What It Took brings together founders, executives, creators, and builders for honest conversations about what it really took to keep going, keep building, and keep believing in the vision.

Beyond the podcast, What It Took is also growing into a book project that will capture powerful stories, lessons, and reflections from builders and leaders, creating something that can live beyond each episode.

The platform is also designed to be practical, sharing tools, tips, insights, and actionable checklists to help people navigate entrepreneurship with more clarity, confidence, and direction.

And if there is someone whose story deserves to be heard, you can also submit a guest suggestion through the platform.

This is for the builders.
The dreamers.
The ones figuring it out in real time.
The ones who know that building is never linear.

Welcome to What It Took.

What does it take to make legal support more accessible to the businesses shaping Africa’s future?

For Serisha Barrat, founder and CEO of Lawyered Up, it starts with making legal work simpler, more accessible and better suited to the realities of African businesses.

In our latest CEO Story, Serisha speaks about building legal technology from South Africa, closing the legal-access gap and keeping access to justice at the heart of her work.

I’ve learned a lot over 10 years of building businesses. Here are five lessons that have stayed with me.

1. Plans change. Do your part, but accept that the timing isn’t always up to you. Trust God with what you can’t control.

2. Keep going without the applause. You can’t rely on other people’s approval to believe in what you’re building.

3. Pray for the ability to manage what you’re asking for. More clients, money and opportunities come with more responsibility.

4. Use the quiet periods to learn. How you manage money, handle pressure and treat people matters as the business grows.

5. Don’t wait until you’ve made it to enjoy your life. Make room for the people and experiences that matter to you now. by @serisha_barrat

#WIT2025 Red Carpet Insight

As we look towards #WIT2026, we are continuing around what it means to see yourself in the future of technology.

At the Innovator Trust #WIT2025 Awards, Serisha Barrat reflected on what "Code It. Shape It. Scale It." means for women in technology.

Her message was simple:

"You cannot be what you do not see.

Representation matters. So, does the courage to enter the technology space to take up space boldly and take African innovation beyond the continent.

The future needs more Women in Tech who are ready to code it, shape it, scale it as they believe forward.

I’ve talked myself out of posting more times than I can count. You don’t need to wait until you’ve got a big win to share. Let people see what you’re working on. Posting this before I convince myself to leave it in my drafts. by @serisha_barrat
