šŸŽ‰ Excited to share more moments my first trial run with Miss Sugi by my side! Together, we're learning how to navigate the insanity and changing environments of gig life with a service dog when we will be on our own .

This particular job with Butch & Buttercup leading a fun acrobatics circus playtime, filled with many energetic kids coming in and out of the session!

I discovered managing /stopping adult interactions with a service dog has been a challenge, and now how to manage with groups of kids in the mix would required some creativity. That's where the mobile crate came in handy! It allowed Sugi and me to stay connected while keeping things discreet, letting me focus on the job while keeping her in my sight.

It worked like a charm! šŸŽ‰ Celebrating each discovery and win as we move forward in this journey together.

Sugi and I had two amazing weeks of bonding and practicing . We will share more soon !

Here is the moment she reunited with her trainer who she LOVES. Lindsay is raising her , training her to be ready for a life as a service dog šŸ•ā€šŸ¦ŗ

Sugi is only 10 months old and already such a model citizen and definitely adolescent smartie pants. 5-6 more months of training before her earliest possible come home date ā¤ļøšŸ§”

As her handler I have alot to learn as well but we are being set up for success for the long haul !

One of the biggest hurdles we have already over come was successfully integrating Sugi into a multi animal household where her big sister Tiki is rather protective and particular . All of the prep work and planning , pre meetings and bonding and guidance from lindsay for set up and management allowed for Sugi to successfully integrate into our home meet all of her siblings and bond deepwith Tiki ! They are a perfect play match at home which not onky tuckers Tiki but allows Sugi to be a Dog , release her energy and have fun before being exoected to dial in and work with Mama!

Cheers to the journey

Best of luck lil Suge bear we know you and Linsday got this last leg of the journey!

We all cant wait to see you again!

Marking three years since my accident—a day that forever changed my life—the timing aligned beautifully with my service dog in training, Sugi, visiting for bonding. Yoni and I attended a Kintsugi workshop at @fougallery with the amazing @makomako.kintsugi .

Sugi, a golden retriever, embodies the golden joinery of Kintsugi, where broken pieces are repaired with gold, to celebrate imperfections rather than hiding them.

While my disabilities are mostly invisible, having a service dog creates a visible cue, which can be challenging but also incredibly helpful. Living with a dog makes facing the struggles of invisible disabilities much more manageable for me.

It felt fitting to explore Kintsugi on this significant anniversary, as its philosophy resonates deeply with my healing journey. Under the guidance of the inspiring Makimako, we discovered Kintsugi not just as a craft, but as a powerful practice. One impactful takeaway was, "Every crack tells a story." I chose to work on a piece with minimal "visible damage", opting to add more layers or emphasize the snallest imperfections i noticed , reminding me that our wounds, like cracks in pottery, can tell beautiful stories.

I truly appreciate that each piece of Kintsugi art I’ve seen becomes more beautiful and intriguing after its repairs. This process transforms what was once broken into something uniquely different and often more interesting.

Sometimes, pieces are lost forever, leaving a void that may be exposed or filled with something new—much like our human journeys through grief. Like broken pottery, we all carry our damages and imperfections. In those moments of shattering, we have the opportunity to rebuild our reality.

Let’s embrace every story and every scar—each one makes us stronger. šŸ’›

Sugi at 10 months service doggo in training

One of her 4 tasks is for something called DPT but she somehow knows my need to laugh atm is greater .

By definition : A Deep Pressure Therapy (DPT) service dog is a specially trained animal that applies controlled body weight and gentle pressure to a handler's body to mitigate symptoms of a disability. Acting like a living weighted blanket, DPT helps calm the nervous system, ground people during panic or flashbacks, and ease sensory overload.

DERP.T is now Sugis offical way to give me the pressure but make me laugh first ....she must somehow know that silliness is the key to to heart ....

Yes yes she does actually DPT i just was able to capture her DERP.T moment ! by @servicedogsugi

🌟 Three Years Since the Accident: A Time for Reflection 🌟

As I mark three years since my life-changing accident, this week has been a poignant reminder of how quickly everything can change. I've shed tears I thought I'd blocked away.

First, we have two weeks of bonding with my service dog, Sugi, before she returns to training. A recent vet scare turned out to be a false alarm—thank goodness! It echoed my past experiences, reminding me that life can pivot in an instant. We're so relieved she's safe.

I also attended a memorial for a fellow artist who took his own life. It cracked my heart open to the pain many of us carry, especially for those of us whose livelihoods rely on our bodies.

Amidst these challenges, reuniting with my dear friend Chris McDaniel brought me joy. Our profound connection allows us to support each other, creating a sacred space for vulnerability and honesty about our struggles.

These experiences activated buried emotions, a reminder that we all face challenges. As I approach three years of healing, I'm pushing myself too hard while juggling work. I need to manage my rest and recovery to truly enjoy this second chance at life.

We are here for a limited time, and the greatest gift is our connection with others. Here’s to entering my fourth year of rehabilitation with more forgiveness, love, and acceptance. taken in Brooklyn, New York by @servicedogsugi

🌟 Meetups with Sugi & Lindsay 🌟

Our recent meetings with Sugi have been incredibly motivating and heartwarming. Getting to know her and learning from Lindsay has been wonderful. Although it's always hard to say goodbye, trusting the process is easy when you’re alongside such a pro like Lindsay.

I see the love and care between Sugi and Lindsay, and I’m grateful for the big puppy tail wags I’m now receiving from Sugi as we bond!

We had some amazing real-world training sessions, for a service dog heading into the circus and theatrical life with Momma including experiences at @abcirque_angelabutch Cirque du Purim in Brooklyn and a Sway job in Philly with @7textures . Sugi and I also had our first bonding sleepover, along with a lovely sister bears intro!

My worries about Tiki, my selective girl, have eased, thanks to Lindsay's expertise in behavioral issues. She helped me understand their cues, and I’m confident that Sugi and Tiki will become great friends in time ! Considering they already had such a blast at their first meeting !

Sugi is smart, serious so much that we have nick named her Sargent Sugi ... just see if you catch that side eye she gives ...... am i right did you catch it .....

Amen tho she can can still be silly as every puppy should, and her stamina and willingness to learn I know will inspire me to step out more into the world. This little gal is truly embodying the art of repair, helping me believe in new possibilities already and we are not even together full-time yet !

Thank you, Lindsay and the Errorless team, for all the love and preparation you’re pouring into Sugi. Our entire pack is overjoyed and we all love her so much already !

2.5 years after the accident that changed how I show up in this world, I caught a glimpse of what my future with Sugi might be like.

Things feel both familiar and different: more planned, more mindful, and I move at a pace that honors my brain and body that im still getting to know now.

A circus elder once told me, after I asked how foolish it is that I might return after the accident . His response, ā€œWe can’t deny who we are.ā€

And how correct he is . Today I’m flying, performing, curating, and directing again at a slower pace while still on rehabilitation but I am so grateful for each moment of relearning who I am now with all I loved before .

Many therapists encouraged a service dog through out my rehabilitation. After extensive research and intake, I choose @errorlessservicedogs. I was matched with a trainer the amazing Lindsay you will see here , my pup was choosen, and now Sugi is an official SDIT assigned to me, named after the healing philosophy of kintsugi.

Here is a backstage moment catching the tail end of @pitbull in concert at @xfinitymobilearena after performing sway preshow with @7textures.

I caught a glimpse of the life I love—soon with a pup by my side who will help me navigate just some of the many daily challenges .

I can’t wait to see Sugi and Lindsay again, and I’m excited for this next chapter forward.

Not a bad first gig for little Sugi Bear. Hats off to all SDIT and the trainers and programs that provide four-legged support to people with disabilities.

And for all the companies embracing artists with disabilties šŸ’š

Today we met Sugi, the puppy who will become my service dog andĀ eventual side kick in navigating this world. It’s been 2.5 years since the accident that changed everything, and one thing this journey has taught me is that it truly takes a village. I’m learning to lean into support, discover new communities while believing in hope again.

Grief and joy often ride in the same pocket, and I’m learning to hold both.Healing, like training a service dog, is a journey, not a destination.

A heartfelt thank you to Errorless Service Dogs and our trainer Lindsay for their kind, compassionate approach and for tailoring training to the unconventional life of a circus artist. This is a long road to prepare a service dog for the life of a showgirl, but your care, dedication to detailĀ  have been a great comfort.

Thank you to Atlantic Coast Gymnastics @atlanticcoastgym for welcoming us so warmly and helping prepare Sugi for a life around acrobatics.Ā  Your lovelyĀ gym and kind teamĀ are a perfect safe haven for the start of this leg of our journey.

And to my husband, Yoni Bear, whose unwavering love and tireless support make every milestone possible. He’s the unsung hero who sees my struggles—and somehow knew that the key to moving forward might be ā€œanother dog.ā€

Here’s to Sugi, and to the village that makes this bright future possible. Well done, baby girl, on your first day meeting us andĀ  beginning to run away with the circus !!!

REPAIR : Aug 11th 2023 marks anniversary of the accident that brought my world to a halt.

When I arrived at the hospital's Trauma unit, a medical team was on me immediately. They leaped into action despite my being alert and able to communicate without warning. As per protocol, my clothes were cut off instantly; I was " trauma naked," being hooked up to all sorts of monitors and IV ports to be sent off for scans.

I was restrained on the backboard in a tiny enclosure as the contrast was pumping through me. As someone with medical trauma from childhood, this was extremely difficult to stay calm.

The contrast warmed my body, and I could taste the metallic chemicals. The only way not to panic was to go somewhere else, so I began imagining the art of Kintsugi, a traditional Japanese repair. When pottery breaks, rather than throwing it away, it repairs the cracks with gold—making the visible fractures beautiful and stronger by strengthening them with gold. The true definition of broken is beautiful and more robust now.

I imagined the contrast was gold being pumped through me, sealing the fractures and filling every damaged area with gold.

When I was released, I was given my spliced open clothes back.
What if I didn't throw them away but repaired them?
The idea and motivation for this shoot came to mind, giving me a longer-term personal goal: reclaim my life, rise again, and not mask what I've been, understand it has changed me, and learn to love and accept me at each phase of the journey anyway.

It has not been an easy year, but perhaps this is the year I am the most proud of myself for surviving; many times, giving up seemed so much easier.

I am ready for this next year. I'm ready for the next steps of healing, reclaiming, refilling, and spending my life in meaningful and aligned ways.
I could never thank my army of support enough for helping me survive this year. I will share more pictures and reflections soon.

THANK YOU ALL, for restoring my life in so many ways and helping me rebuild in gratitude and appreciation for being on this insane life journey.
