THE FINALE: THE WOMEN. THE LEGACY. THE CROWN. 👑🛸📕
The Mothership eventually came down from the apex on P-Funk’s reign.
Parlet ended. The Brides of Funkenstein went their separate ways. But the women of P-Funk did not disappear.
Their voices, style and influence continued long after their time aboard the Mothership.
Lynn, Dawn, Debbie, Shirley, Mallia, as well as the remaining members of Parlet (Jeanette Washington & Janice Evans) and the Brides (Sheila Horne & Jeannette McGruder) are all Funk Queens. 👑
But in 1997, when Parliament-Funkadelic was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, none of the women were inducted or invited. Yet their contributions cannot be erased.
My biggest motivation in writing Mothership Connected was to get my mother, and these other important women’s stories out in the music history ether.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ON THE ONE ☝️ MOTHERSHIP CONNECTED
For 15 episodes, I’ve shared pieces of their history. But their story is much bigger than 15 episodes.
These women weren’t standing on the sidelines of P-Funk history.
They helped make it… and their story continues. 🛸
📚 Their story is Mothership Connected: The Women of Parliament-Funkadelic.

THE MOTHERSHIP COMES DOWN 🛸

By 1981, the P-Funk empire that had dominated the previous decade was beginning to unravel.

Record deals were disappearing. Money was running low. And according to Mallia Franklin, drugs had become one of the few things in the organization that was still plentiful.

But there was still one more ride.

In the spring of 1981, Parliament-Funkadelic launched the Greatest Funk on Earth Tour—what would become P-Funk’s last large-scale tour as major recording artists.

The tour still played major arenas. Bootsy Collins, Sly Stone, Zapp and others were part of the spectacle. And Mallia Franklin was the only female performer to remain for the duration of the tour.

Despite everything happening around her, Mallia still believed P-Funk could recover:

“Although the organization was in trouble, I still believed in George . . . always have.”

She thought it was simply a low period—and that George would turn it around.

But road manager Cheryl James saw things differently.

Looking at what was happening behind the scenes, Cheryl remembered thinking:
“This tour is doomed!”

George never formally announced that it was over.

But Cheryl put it another way:
“Even Stevie Wonder could see that it was over.”

The Mothership had changed music, fashion and live performance forever.

But by 1981, an extraordinary era of P-Funk was coming to an end.

🚀 The Mothership was coming down.

But the women’s stories were far from over.

PARLET’S LAST DAYS
“SOMETHING DIDN’T FEEL RIGHT…” 👀

By April 1979, Parlet had already lost two of its three founding members.

Debbie Wright left during the first album, immediately replaced by Shirley Hayden. Then Mallia Franklin left the group after refusing to perform in Paris.

But Mallia had already recorded vocals for Parlet’s second album, Invasion of the Booty Snatchers.

So when the new Parlet—Shirley Hayden, Jeanette Washington and new member Janice Evans—flew to Los Angeles to promote the new album, the first single “Ridin High” still featured Mallia’s lead vocals.

And when they met representatives from Casablanca Records, Shirley immediately sensed something was wrong.

“I instantly felt the label reps’ uncomfortable vibe.”

When Casablanca saw the new promotional photographs, Shirley remembered:

“The Casablanca staff looked puzzled . . . startled is a better word.”

Later, at a record-store appearance on Sunset Boulevard, Shirley noticed whispers among the Casablanca staff—and watched one representative pick up the phone.

“For all I knew, they could have been calling Neil Bogart. I didn’t feel good about the vibe of it at all. It made me nervous.”

And then the line that said everything:

“It felt like this new Parlet was already a letdown to the people at Casablanca.”

The lineup had changed. The relationship with the label was changing.

And with Janice having to be replaced by her sister Gwen Dozier to promote the last album, unfortunately, Parlet’s final chapter had begun.

🎤 MALLIA CONNECTS DR. DRE & ROGER TROUTMAN FOR 2PAC

Years after helping shape the P-Funk story, Mallia Franklin was still making connections that would change music.

This time, the connection was between Dr. Dre and Roger Troutman of @thezappband. While working with Dre and Snoop Dogg at Death Row Records in the early 90s, she made it happen.

That introduction would ultimately help bring Roger’s unmistakable talk-box sound to “California Love,” one of the defining records of the 1990s.

From bringing Bootsy Collins to George Clinton…
to bringing Junie Morrison into the P-Funk universe…
to connecting Roger Troutman with Dr. Dre…

Mallia Franklin had an extraordinary instinct for putting the right musical people in the same room.

Different generations. Different eras.
But the same connective thread… Mallia Franklin.

THE NEW BRIDES OF FUNKENSTEIN

In April 1979, Lynn Mabry made a split-second decision to abandon the Brides of Funkenstein—just as the group was gaining popularity.

That left Dawn Silva to carry on alone.

But two of the group’s background singers—the “Bridesmaids”—came up to the altar. Sheila Horne and Jeannette “Mackie” McGruder joined Dawn, and the Brides were reborn as a trio.

The new Brides didn’t always blend easily. Their different voices, personalities and ambitions created competition—even in the studio. But that tension also produced a harder, more rock-oriented sound.

George Clinton later said:
“These new Brides weren’t supposed to be as good as they turned out.”

Their 1979 album, Never Buy Texas from a Cowboy, won the Brides a Cashbox Music Award, and would eventually be named one of Rolling Stone’s “50 Coolest Albums of All Time.”

@mothershipconnected 📕MALLIA QUITS PARLET IN PARIS 🇫🇷💥

In 1978, Parlet traveled to Paris—but for Mallia Franklin, the trip would become the end of her time with the group.

Frustrated with the conditions surrounding Parlet and feeling that the Brides of Funkenstein were receiving greater attention and support, Mallia reached her breaking point.

When it was time for Parlet to perform, Mallia refused to go onstage.

Shirley Hayden and Jeanette Washington performed without her.

Mallia had been one of Parlet’s founding members, its leader, and a major voice on the group’s recordings. But after Paris, she never returned to Parlet.

Garry Shider later summed up what the moment meant:

“The competition was over . . . The Brides won.”

It was the end of one version of Parlet—but not the end of the group, and certainly not the end of Mallia Franklin.

THE NIGHT GEORGE CLINTON “KIDNAPPED” BOOTSY 🚀🎸

Mallia Franklin was the person who had originally introduced Bootsy Collins @bootsy_collins to George Clinton. @yolikegeorge

That introduction would become one of the most important connections in P-Funk history.

But in 1975, when Bootsy needed work, she hooked him up with a Motown producer named Jeffrey Bowen.

Bootsy Collins was in Los Angeles when George Clinton showed up at the Holiday Inn with a plan.

George wanted Bootsy.

What followed was one of those wild P-Funk stories that sounds almost too crazy to be true. George and Cholly Bassoline got Bootsy out of the hotel and away from the situation he was in—not a literal kidnapping, but the cementing of a musical partnership that would help change the sound of P-Funk forever.

Sometimes music history turns on one introduction…and one very strange night in Hollywood.

THE STORY BEHIND THE BRIDES’ PHOTO SHOOT 💔📸

The photographs looked glamorous. What you couldn’t see was the grief.

In 1978, Lynn Mabry and Dawn Silva had just attended the funeral of P-Funk singer and guitarist Glenn Goins. Dawn lost a dear friend and Lynn was devastated by the loss of a man she deeply loved.

At the repast following the funeral, a car arrived to take Lynn and Dawn to New York City for their first Brides of Funkenstein photo shoot.

Dawn remembered: “We’d cried all day; the last thing we wanted to do was take pictures.”

Their hair had been affected by the rain. Much of their makeup had been cried away.

Those photographs would help introduce the Brides of Funkenstein to the world. But behind the gowns, the lights and the imagery were two young women who had spent the day grieving.

That’s the story the photographs don’t tell.
