“Chasey’s Tackle Box”, 48” x 60”, oil on canvas. This commission has been a few months in the making. I met with these new clients (fine folks) on Sunday, my 55th birthday. These milestones always miraculously align in my life; seemingly as poignant North Stars. Reminders that I’m fortunate to be on the right path. The big reveal moment was a surprise for a spouses 10th anniversary gift and they were thrilled, delighted and amazed when they finally saw the finished product. The work contains roughly 200 Easter eggs; symbols representing a wide range occasions, travels, and events they have experienced together. The meeting lasted over two hours and by the end, we were friends. During these moments, I feel a kind of genuine gratitude and sense of accomplishment that resonates deeply when I consider the miles, hours, and other measurables devoted to my craft. I also reflect on all I have given to my work and how it has given back to me tenfold in return. I realize my life, in large part, has been devoted to protecting and cultivating a sort of strong yet fragile entity. A kind of lightning I’ve learned to bottle and present in my own special way. One of my life’s greatest gifts continues to emerge in the form of days like these. Signals, reminding me with great encouragement to simply keep going. I know I say it a lot, but it always bears repeating. Thank you to all the people who love, enjoy, and support what I do. “Fifty Fathoms” 36” x 36”, oil on canvas. My recent works typically receive titles upon their completion. This one earned its moniker at the intersection of my fascination with watchmaking and the realization of its influence on my work. #blancpain famously was an original innovator of the dive/tool watch. It was aptly named fifty fathoms in reference to its durability and water resistance. In my case (pun intended) resilience, endurance, mastery and focus are also at the core of my process. The intricacies in a time pieces’ mechanics, often referred to as complications, mirror the detail, rhythm, and intention in my art; patterns with a purpose, parts of a whole, each engineered to contribute to the work’s function. While my work does not tell time, it IS intended to transcend it. My life, in part, continues to be a form of meditation that has led to creation. Introducing “Pennies” 48” x 72”, oil on canvas. This has been a well documented, months long odyssey resulting in a pot of gold (and copper) at the end of the rainbow. Both beauty and beast, this giant jewelry box is a celebration of precious metals and a deep dive into the meaning of value, the concept of currency, and the reality of strength in numbers. The work also represents the culmination of persistence, dedication, and hard work. What is truly earned and equally valuable is indeed, the process itself. My favorite project of 2024, “Sona’s Dragon” 24” x 48”, oil on canvas. Scroll through to see the adorable recipient and proud papa, a descriptive video, the back of the artwork, and the drawing that started it all. A friend contacted me from Japan after a recent train ride with his daughter, who was doodling during the entire trip, to share her drawing inspired by my work. They’ve been collectors for a long time and she has grown up surrounded by all sorts of my subjects, including mythological creatures. My friend requested a work that would maintain the spirit of the original drawing while still embracing the painting as my own, thereby making it a true collaboration and bringing the chain of events full circle. I have collaborated with watchmakers, knife makers, and fashion designers, but at 8 years old, Sona is my youngest (and favorite) partner to date. When I received this photo of her (again, scroll through to see) the caption read, “tell him I love it!!”.
