there is a pillar that holds up the creative life that, when not present - or when fractured - inevitably contributes to the disintegration and downfall of the artist. my life as an artist has been characteristically shrouded by a lack of understanding that has surrounded my work like a fog. i have lived in 6 different states, cities, communities ... many welcoming to the art of creative toil, but resistant toward the plants that grow up from the soil of my life. (that's not to say that the fruits have been entirely rejected, but, when a stalk shoots up from the ground and is not immediately recognized as familiar, safe, common, easy or necessary, there can be a present impulse to reject that plant and chop it at the stem - thwarting the birth of fruit) i now live in a city (and time) that feels oddly receptive to my work and contributions to the world. seeds that would not - could not - grow before have sprung up toward eagerness, and they have been welcomed with encouragement and curiosity and a soft, joyful gaze. that pillar of collaboration - that support of support - has been met with intrigue and active reinforcement. conversations of embellishment and expansion. a desire to engage. acts of aid. we all need help at some point. that's all i'm really saying. i have wanted and asked for help. i have been helped. i have needed more than i was provided. i have enjoyed an abundance. the weather changes this way too. the sun shines on different seeds at different times in the day, in the month, in the year, in the life ... *switching off the poetry* there are artists in my life right now who are willing to help me, with generosity and charisma. i profoundly cherish that support. it's novel and refreshing. i'm grateful. a huge thanks to @roxymoure, who came and photographed me last month while i was recording the foundational majority of my upcoming record, and to @ptonypterodactyl who let me both guard and utilize his own home for the entire process. this may be the most beautiful photograph that has ever been made of me. it's seth i see in this image. with great joy, - seth #elsewhere #cinematicsingersongwriter #artistbranding #collaboration #seth taken in Los Angeles, California by @sethiselsewhere

i began writing a large(r) collection of songs near the end of last year, when a friend so generously made his own space - furnished with a magical felt piano - available to me on wednesdays. i had come to the startling realization that i hadn't played a real piano in months, i was in a really uncomfortable relationship with my voice and i felt i'd lost touch with the simple art of sitting down with an instrument to write a song, start to finish in one sitting (without the beeps and boops of ableton, auto-tune or any modern music production equipment) ... just a pen and a songbook that @brettaland gave to me in 2019. (he'd written “teach me some melodious sonnet sung by flaming tongues above“ on the first page) nearly (but not quite) every wednesday since then, i drove to Aaron's place to sit and write, through the winter, through the spring, into a brutal summer, alone and also with a lamb-like puppy (who was sleeping at my feet as i captured the final song on this EP) what came of these wednesdays was a physical book of very raw and confronting songs, that i used - like a faithful trowel - to get down on my proverbial heart-knees and dig into a soil beneath which i knew not what i might find. i was, at least, searching for the heart of stone that seemed to reside inside my chest (at worst, i guess), and / or perhaps a near-dead seedling of tender joy (at best, i guess) trying to root in - in much need of help. i discovered so many questions, whose root tendrils had been so hastily (or maybe so slowly) woven into my heart and spirit. so many questions ... and at that piano i began to practice the discipline of showing up, to bring heavy (and potentially unanswerable) questions to the Father, while learning to less often and less violently brace for the impact of the judgment or punishment i fearfully expected. so, some songs came to me, from somewhere ... else ... and i scrawled them down with a ballpoint pen on paper, and then voice memo'd each one as best i could at the end of each one's first day on breath. these five songs are five of those songs: voice memos from day one, all in their original forms.
