Link in bio! But here’s the summary: A.I. chatbots really can help you plan your travels. But only if you’re willing to put in the time, do it right, and still use other sources you trust.

Big takeaways: 1) Before you start asking for advice, give the bot a detailed description of exactly how you (or your group) like to travel. 2) Then ask for what you want as specifically as possible. (I asked for separate lists of activities, hotels, restaurants and nightlife.)

3) Tell the bot to help you help it. Maybe tell it to respond to every prompt with three questions that will help it pinpoint exactly what you are looking for. 4) Check EVERYTHING. Hallucinations are real.

5) Realize that these bots CANNOT search everything you can. For example, only ChatGPT can fully read the awesome food site Eater.com. Best advice: start with your favorite sources, then feed the bot what you’ve found and ask it to incorporate your suggestions.

6) Make this a repeated game. After your trip, give the bot feedback and tell it to incorporate your feedback into your next trip. (The easiest way to do this is to create a separate “project” in ChatGPT or Claude. Really, it’s easy.)

I acknowledge this is interesting timing for a light-hearted A.I. piece. Someone suggested the headline should have been: “A.I. Will Kill Everyone Within a Decade. In the Meantime, Here’s How to Get It to Plan a Better Vacation.” by @sethkugel

Just out in @nytimestravel, my five-day road trip through southern Brazil where the languages and traditions of 19th century German and Italian immigrants have held on. 1) A home in the Taquari River Valley; 2) in Coronel Pilar, singing in “Talian,” an amalgam of northern Italian dialects; 3) “café colonial” at Stacke; 4) a shop owner drinking chimarrão (aka mate) in Antônio Prado:; 5) A Talian group singing “La Bella Polenta” in Pinto Bandeira; 6) wine country outside Bento Gonçalves; 7) @vohertha_’s cafe and general store in a former German dance hall in Nova Petrópolis.
