PoCo gave my family a chance. My parents came here from Nigeria with nothing and built a real life on entry-level work, paid the bills, put down roots, raised me. I'm about the same age now, doing the same kind of work, and that stability is way harder to reach than it was for them. Not just for me - but for a lot of us.

As I've said many times before, the local level of government is what we actually see every day - the potholes, the buses, what gets built where - and where can do something about our collective situation.

Here's the catch; Nobody knows who I am yet. Except maybe you!! So do me a favour: share this on your story, send it to your group chat, drop a comment, or just message me. It's hard to meet our demographic at the door; so send me a message and tell me what's good in your neighbourhood, what's driving you nuts, and what matters to you.

Hi! The (non-existent) rumours are true; I'm running for City Council in Port Coquitlam

I've called Port Coquitlam home for over 20 years. This is the city that gave my family stability, community, and a real chance to build a life. But over our lifetimes, we've seen that script flipped, no matter what stage of life you're at. Stability feels further away than it did for their generation, for me, and for a lot of people I know. Young professionals, service workers, tradespeople, renters, and families are doing the work and still wondering whether they can afford a future here.

Young people aren't well represented, and politics doesn't speak to us. I want to change that! I want to see us represented at every level of government. I want to show, not just say, that when we show up, we win, and win big, and that we can use the power of government to make a material difference in our lives.

Municipal government is the level we feel the most, and the level that can move the needle most directly on cost of living, the housing crisis, and building the third spaces our generation cares about. But this isn't just about our demographic. These changes raise quality of life for every resident of Port Coquitlam, and across the region!
So please join me; from now until October 17th, I want to hear from as many of you as possible!!

Small community businesses are an endangered species. Local government can help them thrive and provide the third spaces our community and youth are longing for. Accessory Commercial Units (ACUs) can be a great solution: local shops for residents right where they live, and an affordable way for resident business owners to have real storefronts! taken in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia by @setukdo

Climate action isn't inherently expensive - it can be fiscally responsible! expanding our tree canopy and building a climate resilient city saves money in the long run by protecting neighbourhoods before the heatwaves and storms hit. I'll work with the council team to deliver on that to protect all PoCo residents!! taken in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia by @setukdo

Port Coquitlam used to build homes for every stage of life! They're still here, housing our neighbours, and there's nothing disruptive about them. Making this kind of housing easier to build is within council's control, and I want to get it done - to keep families together, and do so right by all residents by giving them options to stay!

The grocery monopoly may be a challenge for senior levels of government, but municipalities still have tools to make local competition easier. One of those tools can be Accessory Commercial Units (ACUs)! ACUs are like accessory dwelling units for small businesses. These can range from a converted garage or ground-floor room to small commercial spaces on a residential lot. ACUs won't suddenly spawn new independent grocery chains, but they can make it easier for our residents to open a corner store, bakery, cafe, bookstore, barbershop, or any other small business in our neighbourhoods that are increasingly losing the ones that already exist.

For decades, we have separated homes, shops, and workplaces into increasingly isolated zones, with a few exceptions. The result of this land use? Quick, everyday errands require a car, and large chains are dominating the market. While municipalities don't have a complete silver bullet for the grocery monopoly, local government can make it easier for small businesses to exist in other forms in our communities! taken in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia by @setukdo

What is the "transportation tax"?

It’s the fact that in Port Coquitlam, residents can spend as much as $1,900 per month on personal transportation, including car payments, insurance, gas, and maintenance. That means transportation can cost households more than housing, making Port Coquitlam one of only five municipalities in Metro Vancouver where this is the reality. I’m focused on affordability, and that means looking at the costs we don’t see on a tax bill.

Most of us who can drive like going for a drive. However, when driving becomes the only practical way to get around, we all end up competing for the same roads. That means more traffic, more congestion, more frustration, and higher costs. We can cut the "transportation tax" by giving residents more choices to get around our city.

That means more local businesses through accessory commercial units, so people can be closer to the things they need. It means faster, more reliable buses, with priority and more frequent service, so transit becomes a genuinely fast option. It means better walking and cycling connections, too.

Giving people more ways to get around means fewer cars competing for space on our roads and fewer transportation costs hitting household budgets!
