POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Today at The Late Shows 🌉

Seven Bridges is an interactive sound installation by SALT, commissioned by Creative Central NCL and inspired by the seven bridges across the Tyne at Newcastle and Gateshead.

Each bridge unlocks a different layer of music, from drums and percussion to strings, guitars, brass, choir and keys.

Step onto the pads with someone else and you’ll unlock new music. To hear the full piece, 14 people need to take part together.

Seven years ago, while working away, Paul wrote the beginnings of a song. Many people expressed an interest in recording it but at the time it never found a home.

Now, 7 years later, through a commission from @creativecentralncl we have embarked on a journey to give the song new life. Drawing together as many local collaborators as possible, in a time of political division and community tension, Seven Bridges is an anthem to the place that we all love and call home.

During the installation the Millennium Bridge unlocks Keys

Opened in 2002 and designed by WilkinsonEyre with Gifford, the Millennium Bridge introduced a new way of crossing the Tyne. it’s tilting structure allows the whole bridge to rotate to let ships pass, rather than opening in separate parts. This simple but distinctive movement quickly made it one of the most recognisable crossings in the region taken in Discovery Museum by @sevenbridgestyne

Opened in 1928 and designed by Mott, Hay and Anderson. The Tyne Bridge became the defining arch of Newcastle & Gateshead. Its vast steel span unified the city in a single gesture, carrying thousands across the river each day. Rivers divide people, bridges connect them Through bridges we are a unified place.

Since AD 122 there has always been a bridge over the Tyne. Now there are seven.

We are a bridge building place.

Seven Bridges celebrates our historic ability as a local community to build bridges.

Industry, sport, culture, music, we come together in many ways.

A bespoke musical composition shaped by collaboration, interaction comes when 2 people stand at each end of a bridge unlocking new elements to the music.

Through collaboration a new connection between people is made and the music changes.

During the installation the Swing Bridge unlocks Brass

Opened in 1876 and designed by Sir W. G. Armstrong, the Swing Bridge was a key industrial era crossing at the heart of the Tyne. Its central span rotates horizontally to allow ships to pass, powered by hydraulic systems developed by Armstrong’s own engineering works. Positioned alongside the High Level Bridge, it connects directly onto the older street network, carrying both vehicles and pedestrians across the river. taken in Discovery Museum by @sevenbridgestyne

During the installation the High Level Bridge unlocks Strings

Opened in 1849 and designed by Robert Stephenson, the High Level Bridge was the first crossing to span the Tyne at the height of the gorge. Its two-deck design carries rail above and road below, combining national transport with local movement in a single structure. Built using large volumes of iron and advanced construction methods for its time, it set a new standard for bridge engineering in the region. taken in Discovery Museum by @sevenbridgestyne
