This was quoted at the end of a book I just finished and it summed up into words what I’ve been trying to form. Why would we conform to society that is crumbling? Why would we conform to a world that is sick, sad, and distracted? God calls us to be set apart. We are called to be salt and light, not the sugar on top of a world that lives to please the enemy. Blending in with society is dangerous, truly. Following the way “everyone else does things” just to not stir the pot or because “it’s just the way the world is right now” is a narrative that I won’t accept. Taking the path less traveled may be harder, but does that mean it’s bad or wrong? Not if you’re kingdom minded and recognize your place in the forever.

Organic body movement that is done outside. Running barefoot. Crawling, jumping, climbing. Native and local plant ID for foraging. Hunting and fishing. Trapping. Growing your own produce and raising animals for food (we aren’t there yet but boy are we ready!). Preserving food. Starting a fire. Knowing how to use weapons. Making tools out of nature materials. Building a shelter.

My 6yo has inspired my family to hone in on these skills. It’s a massive interest of his and with homeschool, we can give him the space needed to learn more about this. We camp a lot and a lot of these skills get used regularly, but I do ask myself, if the world went to 💩, how well would we cope? I’m on a mission to reclaim these lost skills as a family. Homesteading has become an aesthetic, and don’t get me wrong, it can be beautiful, but these skills aren’t for the vibes, these are innate human qualities and ancestral values that we should’ve never lost.

And how relieving it is to be the smaller thing, that we get to receive the bigger love of God and all of His creation. Nourishing food, nature, sunlight, love, art, solitude, history, storytelling. Humble yourself and immerse yourself in real life. We aren’t meant to carry the weight of the world, only the weight of eternity. We are called to be salt and light in our earthly vessel, used for His glory, here to enjoy God’s creation, loving it and others deeply, serving others over ourselves, accepting God’s grace and love, and willingly keeping ourselves in the right place of being small in His presence, giving Him all the glory.
