There are few people who have had such a hand in the evolution of music as @sevwave. She presents IMPROVISATIONS ON FOUR SEQUENCES on her Buchla 200e, after @courtneybailey___, whose live set features music from IN DREAM alongside new, synth-based compositions of her own right. by @sevwave

Suzanne Ciani has been defining the Bay Area sound for over fifty years.

She arrived for a master’s in composition at Berkeley and fell in with Don Buchla and the San Francisco Tape Music Center: the room founded by Pauline Oliveros, Morton Subotnick and Ramon Sender, where the Buchla synthesizer was born. Entanglement stands to celebrate this legacy: Oliveros’s Quantum Listening, and its thesis that a room and its listeners are all part of the generative process. Few have spent longer proving that than Suzanne.

Her recorded work runs from the early Buchla concerts of the mid-seventies, through the landmark Seven Waves, to Lixiviation, the collection that recovered years of her overlooked studio output. She is a five-time Grammy nominee and remains deeply influential for electronic musicians worldwide.

At Entanglement she will perform live on Saturday, with her beloved Buchla, on a quadraphonic Neptune system. Suzanne sits at the center of everything our program is reaching toward.

Suzanne Ciani was creating the future of electronic music long before the world knew how to listen to it. For more than five decades, the composer, performer, and sound designer has broken boundaries, transforming technology into an instrument for intimacy, sensuality, and deeply individual expression.

From her revolutionary work with the Buchla synthesizer to Coca-Cola’s iconic “pop-and-pour” sonic logo and landmark albums including Seven Waves and The Velocity of Love, Ciani forged a path through spaces that rarely made room for women.

Today, as a new generation discovers the sounds she pioneered, the world has finally caught up to one of electronic music’s most enduring visionaries.

On Oct. 19, 2022, Suzanne Ciani, whose half-century conversation with the Buchla synth has transformed electricity into sonic wombs, effervescent waves, dream suites and silver ships, performed at Amsterdam’s Melkweg with her Buchla 200e and the 50-piece Metropole Orkest. Working with sound engineer KamranV, Ciani placed the audience inside a four-channel system powered by four equally matched speakers. The performance opened that year’s Amsterdam Dance Event.

Ciani needs little introduction to In Sheep’s Clothing readers. She worked alongside Don Buchla in the late 1960s, helping build the modular electronic instrument that would become her lifelong collaborator. She created the first female voice heard in a pinball machine and in 1981 became the first woman to solo-score a major studio film, Lily Tomlin’s The Incredible Shrinking Woman. More recently, she scored The History of Concrete, John Wilson’s feature-length documentary debut. Ciani now performs exclusively in quadraphonic sound. Her 2018 album with KamranV, LIVE Quadraphonic, was the first new quadraphonic LP in 30 years.

The Metropole Orkest concert returned Ciani to her beginnings as a classical composer and realized an idea she had carried across decades of electronic work. “My dream has always been to unite the Buchla with the emotional breath of an orchestra,” Ciani says. “I began as a classical composer — the orchestra is in my DNA. And in the end electronics and orchestra are not opposites. They’re two ways of shaping energy.”

I’m selling my beautiful coastal Bolinas home, where I lived for 35 years and wrote many of my iconic albums, some just by looking out of the window. I guess at this stage of life, it’s time for me to live closer to family. I never thought I would sell the house and hope that someone who truly appreciates the magic of this place will become the next owner. There’s repair work that needs to be done, but over the past two years, I was able to get permits for the work, which is a huge achievement, and so the work can go forward quite easily.

Out today: Legendary composer, sound designer, and Buchla maestra Suzanne Ciani adopted the male pseudonym and persona Steve, by adjusting the pitch of her voice, she re-invented herself as what was clearly a gay man. As Steve she recorded 3 songs with Peter Baumann of Tangerine Dream and New Jersey house producer George Louvis.

Steve’s Out of the Closet perfectly captures the delirious techno-poptimism of the 1980s downtown avant-garde, with parallels in Robert Ashley’s Perfect Lives or Lynn Goldsmith’s project Will Powers, responsible for the track “Adventures in Success.” The Steve sleeve was designed by Eloise Shir-Juen Leigh, and the record also includes a birthday card with liner notes from Ciani. by @sevwave

Suzanne Ciani shows David Letterman her Eventide Harmonizer in 1980 that she would use to create her alias Steve. “When I adjusted the pitch of my voice to 0.80, my natural voice became re-invented as what was clearly a gay man, who I called Steve. I became Steve; and Steve expressed himself as only he could.”

Finally Steve comes Out Of The Closet on August 14th and you can finally hear these lost recordings for the first time, more than 40 years later. by @sevwave

The secret is out! (of the closet) Legendary composer, sound designer, and Buchla maestra Suzanne Ciani has a staggering list of accolades and accomplishments, from scoring Hollywood films to releasing influential new age records to literally designing the Coca-Cola bottle-opening sound. In the late 70s/early 80s, Ciani, while living in New York, acquired an Eventide H 949 harmonizer, which offered high fidelity pitch-shifting. In her words, “When I adjusted the pitch of my voice to 0.80, my natural voice became re-invented as what was clearly a gay man, who I called Steve. I became Steve; and Steve expressed himself as only he could.”

Ciani adopted the male persona and collaborated with Peter Baumann of Tangerine Dream on “Steve Goes to a Party.” The track features Ciani-as-Steve adlibbing in decadent and delirious fashion alongside Baumann’s robotically funky beats. Steve would emerge again a few years later at George Louvis’s Stardust Studios in New Jersey, to create “Steve Saves the World,” an absurdist and ecstatic proto-house groover complete with a gospel-esque chorus from the Stardust All-Stars. This EP is rounded out by a birthday wish to Ciani’s then-boyfriend Alfred on “Happy Birthday Wishes” featuring Suzanne.
