It's been a while since we posted an a lot has changed for Sew-Rite. We moved to a new studio that is twice the size, taking over the studio that was home to @comrags for over a decade. Our team has grown from around 10 to over 20 people, and we've taken on some pretty ambitious projects (if you know you know.... @shopsienavida). It's time we let you back into our makers' world.

Thank you to @leduyenoi who is returning to our team to help capture and introduce you to moments in the studio.

A roll of the last few weeks and projects in our old studio. Its a done deal baby! We have officially moved to our new much bigger, much more sun drenched, beautiful home at 812 Dundas street west.

It’s a bit difficult to put into a caption how it all feels because I haven’t given myself much time to write and reflect lately. Moving has put me into take it one day at a time, and take a lot of naps mode. It has been two crazy, beautiful extremely full years. I first moved to a commercial space to start Sew-Rite after home sewing production for a few years. Naively, I thought the decision would be a simple one to bring through to fruition. I was sorely mistaken as all my closest friends and family received phone call after phone call from me the first few months certain I would, and should quit. I want to say it does get much easier to do hard things once you start doing them. Now I’m so lucky to be surrounded by an extremely talented team who can all run circles around me at what they do. We make mistakes, we learn, we break things, we fix them, my dad installs new shelves, we implement and sometimes forget about new systems and posters and plans, and all of this is in pursuit of progress. Of bringing ourselves, our craft, our work and viewpoints on clothing closer to a full understanding of how being intentional in the process is the whole process.

Thank you to all the beautiful people who have supported this project from the beginning, and those who we’ve been lucky enough to meet throughout it all. I look forward to you and many more walking up the stairs to our new studio where we carry on the made in Canada history that was set up for us here by the amazing women at @comrags who have passed this space onto us. by @sew_rite_studio

Around the studio lately.... Sample sewing for Wanze, ideas (big news soon!), samples and production all at once, and Mei's bag of candies which she shares at the end of the day if we did a good job before she asks me if I'm going home 🤍 taken in Toronto Ontario Canada by @sew_rite_studio

Fashion designers work in seasonality and drops. Sometimes we don't get to see our clients come by for a few months while you work behind the scenes on your new ideas. This means some of you haven't met the newest members of our team! We look forward to having you back in to say hello, and hope you'll get to say hi and welcome to Yohana when you next pop in 👋

I have held onto this image of a Dutch chair makers bandaged hands for many years. I return to it for reminder of the value of Craft. His fingers each poised to pluck the strings with a tension he would be incapable of directly describing but very capable of feeling as he repeats his processes not day after day but year after year. His fingers refuse to calus enough to protect tender flesh from the repetitve drawings of cord back and forth, back and forth forming a seat for a families memories to rest on. Yet he continues.

Craft is the human touch, the pressure to be perfect must be eliminated in search of the virtues of the marks of a hand that occasionaly tremble, an eye that sometimes slips, a heel that presses to hard or a second too late. We try to make the most beautiful clothes and sometimes in minute ways we fail. Most failures in cloth can be carefully picked and reapplied shifting components of a garment over as little as 1/16 of an inch. Sometimes these shifts are tiring trials of willpower. First you admit defeat and then you double down and tackle the problem at hand, tackle the problem of training and improving a hand. One of the few components of a garment which is a single shot is the welt pocket. Seen on suit jackets, and the back of trousers it involves cutting into the cloth. Each teacher will have different ways to sew a welt to different effect and different uses.

Cayenne working on upcycle for Lost Boys Vintage.

We've recently seen 3 impressive upcycle projects come through the studio after I swore not to do upcycle because its really complicated compared to our usual manufacture. But my mind can be changed! Its ended up to be quite refreshing to work with those so passionate about renewing/extending the story of already made garments/cloth that they can.
