#sewfizzteacated26 outfit check! This is the @taukomagazine #ruckusdress which I saw @cazsews wear on the runway at the stitch festival… I knew then that I needed to make this dress!

I had always planned to make it in this @marybensonlondon tartan, however when I saw this black crepe back satin Vivienne Westwood deadstock fabric at @newcrafthouse … my creative hacking brain took over!! 😂

I pretty much did my own thing! I left off the front pocket an added in seam pockets both sides, I lined it but sewed the side seams as separates as I wanted the layers to move independently (joining at the ruching as I wanted them to do that together! ) I Split the colours at the seam for the front but as the back is one piece I kept that one colour.

I wore it with the hat I recently made in the @katherineelizabethmillinery Alice in wonderland challenge as it matched the vibe so well!! and obviously with boots from Vinted and made shiny by me! (@solely_cinderella ) .

I love this dress and have another planned…denim.. with maybe gingham searsucker fabric too?!?!

Swipe to the last pic to see Jean at the event in her version too, I love that she altered the neck line, I’d like to try that too. Hers is in a viscose so is a lot more swishy and moved beautifully. This is what I love about sewing my own clothes.. you can take a pattern and make it your own… Jean and I in the same pattern but totally different looks! 👍👌👌 how perfect is that x by @sewing_cinderella

Road trip today to London ready for two days at the @knitandstitchshows with @portchester_sewing_club and as it’s the @yoannas_studio #teachertop pattern release day, I obviously had to wear one of mine for the trip! This top is very precious, it’s named in memory of her mom who she lost earlier this year and I was honoured to be one of the testers for it. I made two as the first, the white, is a little big, but still wearable so I sized down for the blue… and I’ve worn it loads already! A great quick sew which is very easy to wear too. If you would like your own teacher top the pattern is available on yoannas Etsy shop and currently has 20% off with the code TEACHERTOP20 until 14th October! I’m not a shirt/blouse person but I do really love this and will be making more!
For now.. looking forward to 2 days of fabric and sewing joy!! #patterntest #yoannasstudio #shirt #blouse by @sewing_cinderella

This week I’ve done a millinery challenge and online workshops with @katherineelizabethmillinery , it’s been amazing and I’ve loved learning new skills! The theme was Alice in wonderland so this is my interpretation of the Alice with the gardeners (2,5,7 of spades) painting the roses. (With a bit of steam punk thrown in.. just because! 😂) It is all hand sewn … no glue allowed! (Full disclosure- I did glue the clock face on the rose as I couldn’t figure out another way of attaching it!) Katherine is amazing and I have already learned so much! I may even wear it to #sewfizzteacated26 😂 swipe for a little video of the process! #millinery #millinerytraining #hat #aliceinwonderland @millineryandbusinessacademy_ by @sewing_cinderella

Part 2

The next Zero waste pattern I am championing after the revelations from the @sewwhatsnewpod podcast is the fantastic #envelopedress from @criswoodsews which was my first dress I made (the one in the second pic) I still love that dress and wear it often, the one in my first pic is a tunic version which… full disclosure … was initially a longer length but I didn’t like it so I recently cut it in to a tunic and adore it now! (I will reuse the bit I cut off) swipe to see a little video of the transformation. So agree, sometimes they can look boxy/unflattering, but adapt and accessorise and look at the difference! You can make it work for you! I love this pattern, it’s super quick and easy.. with limited mathematics!! Go check it out!! #zerowastefashion #sustainablesewing #criswoodsewsenvelope #zerowastepattern by @sewing_cinderella

Part 1
I was recently listening to my favourite podcast @sewwhatsnewpod hosted by @sequingirlie and @sowhatifisew (for info I do not listen to them in order!) and was particularly taken by a discussion on zero waste patterns. Sam had some interesting comments following her research on what people think of zero waste patterns. The majority were not in favour, using comments such as, boxy, shapeless and (close your eyes @sequingirlie ) unflattering. I was rather shocked that sewists who are generally creative souls lacked the vision to be able to think outside the box!

I personally am a fan for a number of reasons:
1. I enjoy the challenge of the calculations (even though I hate maths!)
2. I prefer cutting straight lines
3. The obvious- it’s more sustainable.

So I thought I would share some of my favourite zero or v low waste patterns and how I have altered/adapted/accessorised them to make them more personalised. A vlog with more info will inevitably follow!

So let’s kick off with the free robe tutorial from @merrileeboniface . This is a zero waste tutorial designed to be made from (vintage) sheets. I have made a number of these as standard, with one a bit more edgy!
Pic 1 - For me out of a corduroy in my stash.
Pic 2 & 3 - Made as gifts for a girls weekend away in a jersey fabric. I worked out the measurements prior to ordering to accommodate sizing.
Pic 3 - for my mum for a Christmas gift (again jersey fabric)
Pic 4 & 5 - from a shorter length of fabric (stretch), with this one I used my own belt to clinch it and also gathered the sleeves into smaller cuffs (inspired by one of David Bowie’s outfits!) to easily create a going out garment.

Whilst I haven’t used sheets I have slightly adjusted measurements where necessary to use fabric I have and accessorised using scraps/stash fabric/belts. Also as they are square pieces, any left overs are easy to re use. With the girls robes I had a bit of fabric left so whipped up a gift bag to put them in (doubles as a possible wash bag or similar! )
Not only is this wearable, zero waste.. but it is also a free tutorial!
Follow for more throughout the week!
