An Ode to Black Women

Our experience is not linear, it is interconnected. It is movement awaiting to take form and shape the reality living within us. A reality where we not only operate in our purpose but show up in an authenticity that matches the essence of our divine magic.

It is healing, love, community, vulnerability and care. It is Black Girl Magik in full effect. This expression was felt during the launch celebration of @bgmsanctuaryschool as our guests were moved by National Award Winning Slam Poet Tammaka Staley @talkswithtammaka.

Our experience is not linear, it is collective. Black Girl Magik has understood this for the last seven years, and in this new chapter we invite you to continue on the journey with us as we uplift the collective by empowering Black Women to tap into their healer within.

Still reminiscing about Friday night. The first stop of the Cotton Candy Skies tour was full of gifts, shared perspectives and experiences and best of all…art. We talked about love, faith, identity and how all of that is really just about the main thing, love.

I love to hear Tammaka sing. So grateful she was willing to share a song with us and debuted a new poem...inspired by me. Highly recommend being loved by artists 🥹🫶🏽 thank you for helping me know just how seen I am. I’ve watched this clip at least 6 times since yesterday and I cry every time. I couldn’t chop it. My heart won’t let me even when Instagram says “Reels over 3 minutes blah blah…”

Algorithm be damned.

I hope you have less than 5 minutes to witness one of the warmest moments I’ve ever experienced. And I can’t overstate how @homeplxceretreats was the perfect place to share this special night. Realized halfway through last night’s show that at the root of everything I’m sharing, writing and thinking about right now is liberation. We get to be free. In the ways we can be right now, today. We don’t have to wait. Make your stuff. Write, dance, sing, play, laugh yourself free. And if you feel so inclined…share the stuff you make. We can’t wait to see it, feel it, read it, hear it. Your art is for you first though. Always for you first. For us first.

@sexfirmationgoddess was a phenomenal host. They thoughtfully shared their poetry and beautiful voice with us as well as asked me thoughtful questions about the book. Things I hadn’t considered. So grateful to have a friend and a sister in them. I love you Tam.

More reflections and thank yous to come. Today has been for rest and restoration but I couldn’t wait another second to share some of the beautiful images from the first stop on the Cotton Candy Skies: A Wandering Residency Tour.

It’s Our Anniversary! 🥳🪷

I birthed YASÉ in 2020 in my mother’s kitchen
where I was living at the time.
Completing grad school, being her caretaker,
depressed, overworked, hopeful, & knowing I had something big inside me that needed to get out..
Then BOOM. YASÉ came to me after a conversation
with my big sister & coming from sitting at the River
journaling when a dragon fly landed on the top of my bald head like some whimsical Disney princess. 😌
The rest was developed in my being.
Developed in embodying
all that I was fed up accepting & accepting all that needed to be fed…

6 years of seggz education.
6 years of building a consent culture.
6 years of teaching.
6 years of collaborating with
amazing orgs & individuals like
@homeplxceretreats, @charlotteblackpride, @everyblackgirl, @inournames,
& @seedsmidlands
6 years of learning something new
from every young person we have
facilitated workshops for.
6 years of tears.
6 years of much uncertainty
at times.
6 years of navigating homophobia,
classism, racism, colorism & every
other structure that we refused to
let call us dead.
6 years of nos.
6 years of continued trying.
6 years of triumphs.
6 years of growth & being stretched.
6 years of being in my medicine.
6 years of absolute bliss doing
exactly what I love.

We are are still here.
Like the dragonfly transforming
every sky into its own elevated
playground.
Giving us reminders of our sustainability.
Of our Queerness.
& Blackness
& of the radical pleasure we have
birthrights to.
Thank the Lorde, we are still
HERE.
