Urban Data Forest reimagines the city as a site of data storage in plants and trees. It explores the possibility of how DNA data storage technology could transform urban spaces, bringing nature and data back to the city. The concept was developed for the city of The Hague. ⁣

I am grateful for the Science Breakthrough of the Year in Art and Science 2022 award we received from @falling_walls foundation for the Data Garden Research! ⁣⁣
 The piece showcases storage of digital data files in living organisms of Tabacco plant and Arabidopsis.⁣⁣

Fun fact this year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry Laureates: Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten Meldal, and K. Barry Sharpless received Falling Walls Science Breakthrough award last year, so 🤞😉⁣

#Craftology
Meet the mentors!

We can’t wait to hear from Craftology mentors this Saturday - among others, Monika will share stories about her practice this weekend and support the participants during the residency!

Monika Seyfried is a new technology designer exploring how living systems and nature can inspire innovation. She combines digital technologies with the natural environment to create immersive, interactive experiences. She is currently conducting research on storing digital data in organic matter as part of the Ncoded Matter project (@ncodedmatter). She has collaborated with institutions such as the United Nations, the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design, and the London School of Economics, and in 2022 she received the Science Breakthrough Award from the Falling Walls Foundation.

Storing Data in Living Matter - We’re Kicking Off!⁣ @ncodedmatter
Beyond excited to share that this month we’re launching our experiments at @newlab, exploring how digital data can be stored in living organisms.⁣
Throughout 2025–2026, following my fellowship at @osventuresllc, and together with a fantastic team - Alvaro Azcarraga, Jeff Nivala and Annelie Berner, we’ll be testing how digital information - like songs, text, and more - can be encoded and preserved in living matter. From algae and flowering plants to trees, each species offers unique possibilities for future applications we can’t wait to uncover.⁣
⁣
This marks a moment to also dive into environmental research (led by @ab___projects!) and engage with some of the pressing ethical questions around these technologies.⁣

Together with @futuresociety, we envisioned the scent of a future flower, shaping unique perfume concepts we can’t wait to share!⁣
⁣
Through extensive research, @ab__projects and I have been exploring how flowers’ scents evolve with climate change. Though one might think that a rose’s scent will be the same forever, in fact flowers’ scents can change drastically in relation to their climate. Increased ozone emissions disrupt the scent molecules, warmer temperatures or drier conditions put stress on flowers, which they express by altering their scent.⁣
⁣
This made us wonder: just as we try to center ourselves in the present moment by connecting with nature, could we step into the future by experiencing the future nature? How might it feel to immerse ourselves in the scents and colours of the flowers that could surround us in the futures? by @seyfriendly
