We won Science Breakthrough of the Year! ⁣ GYOC was awarded a Science Breakthrough of the Year award by @falling_walls , in recognition of our work on Data Garden – showcasing how we can store digital data in the DNA of plants and retrieve the data.⁣ ⁣ It’s been nearly a year since we were given this award, and we are still really proud of this achievement. @seyfriendly and @cyrusclarke began this initiative in 2018 as simply a pure speculative idea of storing data in plants. ⁣ ⁣ Since then we have met a huge number of incredible people who have helped us realise this idea, including Jeff Nivala who we share this award with as a collaborator within GYOC.⁣ ⁣ It’s also nice to take the opportunity to say an enormous thank you to a lot of you who have helped along the way, we would not have been able to achieve this without your support and encouragement.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #art #bioart #biodesign #biophilia #biotech #biotechnology #data #design #ethics #futures #GYOC #nature taken in Falling Walls by @growyourowncloud

Urban Data Forest Exhibition reimagines the city as a site of data storage in plants and trees. It explores the possibility of how DNA data storage technology could transform urban spaces, bringing nature and data back to the city. Two types of Urban Data Forest are proposed: ‘The Breathing Museum’ which serves to archive public and cultural data, and ‘Living Archives’ which are forests primarily dedicated to citizens as facilities in which they can store their personal data. What if Museums can become forests?⁣ ⁣ What if your favourite sculpture could be kept inside a flower? What if the new exhibition looked like a walk in the park.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Grow Your Own Cloud was working closely with the city of The Hague on a project “Urban Data Forest” to reimagine how the technology of storing data in plants could influence and contribute to their urban infrastructure.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Urban Data Forest was created as part of Repairing the Present, an EU S+T+ARTS Residency, hosted by @in4art. In the last few months the notion of intelligence has come sharply into focus as new models like #ChatGPT, #StableDiffusion or #Lensa bring tangible, visible and even a creative nonhuman intelligence via algorithms to the masses.⁣ ⁣ These new types of intelligence inspire a variety of responses from fear through to awe. They can also draw our attention to the other types of intelligence that we don’t always recognise, especially those that exist within nature. ⁣ ⁣ So let’s take this opportunity to reflect and think about the new questions and possibilities that might arise where the many diverse types of intelligence start to co-exist, cooperate and co-create. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #AI #algorithms #art #artscience #biology #biotech #data #datagarden #dna #eco #flowers #green #GYOC #nature #plant #plants #research #science #synbio by @growyourowncloud

Clouds of Pollen ⁣ @Tabakalera, San Sebastián. ⁣ ⁣ In Clouds of Pollen we examine the possibilities of pollen as an information system technology. ⁣ ⁣ A material that is neither fully alive nor dead, yet capable of spreading data across generations. ⁣ ⁣ The piece is the result of a collaboration with renowned physicist Steen Rasmussen who is researching the creation of artificial life and living materials. ⁣ ⁣ It was created as part of a residency at Tabakalera Media Lab in conjunction with Donostia International Physics Center. @dipc.ehu @tbkmedialab ⁣ ⁣ flower design: @paname_loreestudioa ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #art #artscience #biology #biotech #data #dna #drop #earthfocus #eco #ecofriendly #flowers #green #GYOC #installation #nature #physics #plant #pollen #research #science #synbio taken in Tabakalera by @growyourowncloud

Clouds of Pollen. Imagine the possibilities of pollen as an information system technology. A material that is neither fully alive nor dead. A material dense enough to carry all the information needed to build complex organisms such as trees. A material capable of spreading data across generations. What if we could use that same information system to carry our data to create: 🌱 Systems where data is reproduced by living processes. 🌸 Systems where data can evolve as it is intended to. 🌳 Systems that are as open (or closed) as we desire. As human technology progresses and we start to develop our own ‘living materials’ Clouds of Pollen interrogates how living systems and these living materials might interact. The concept was developed through collaboration with Professor Steen Rasmussen, a renowned physicist exploring artificial life and the creation of living materials, as well as the Tabakalera Media Lab. Clouds of Pollen is currently on show @Tabakalera, San Sebastian. It was created as part of a residency with @tbkmedialab and @dipc.ehu #art #artscience #data #dna #drop #earthfocus #eco #ecofriendly #flowers #green #GYOC #installation #nature #physics #plant #pollen #research #science #sansebastian #synbio #tabakalera by @growyourowncloud

What if we used pollen to share our data? All living things including plants and trees grow based on the instructions in their DNA. In fact DNA is the oldest and most dense information system in the world. A system that can be used to store digital data. This leads to tantalising possibilities. Any type of digital file, image files, text files and even music, could be encoded into the DNA of plants and trees. For example, imagine adding your family photos to an Oak tree. As the tree matures it would naturally reproduce that data and spread it across generations via pollen. We explored this possibility in a new work entitled Clouds of Pollen. #art #artscience #biology #biotech #cloudsofpollen #data #dna #drop #earthfocus #eco #ecofriendly #flowers #green #GYOC #installation #nature #physics #plant #pollen #research #science #synbio by @growyourowncloud
