Another beautiful mind in the 3 elements project is Monika Seyfried @seyfriendly

Monika is an interaction designer whose work combines various fields of science, ethics and the future. She creates at the intersection of new technologies, digital media and the natural environment, designing interactive spaces rich in sensory stimuli.

We meet to talk about Monika’s projects such as @growyourowncloud - an artistic and scientific exploration of the possibilities of storing data in plant DNA or „Future Erasures” - a speculative project examining how new technologies may affect memory, cultural heritage and the processes of forgetting in the near future. I am particularly interested in the process of choosing, selecting or eliminating data.

Verrrrrry excited to share this new microsite for NFP Garden, a new project from @cyrusclarke. Each ‘NFP’ is comprised of data stored in a plant so doesn’t carry the massive carbon footprint associated with a lot of blockchain technology.

Thank you so much @cyrusclarke for getting me involved and for the trust on this! 3D flowers by angel @chrisgolden.art 🧝🏻‍♀️

"What do the microbes in your home talk about? Interspecies Gossip, a collaborative project by @growyourowncloud, @ines.alpha & Henriette Kruse, blends speculative fantasy and synthetic biology. Encounter chatty viruses, bored bacteria, and plants, through bodily rituals designed to help you get in touch with the nature of the home.

The project includes a collection of stories, and a guide, to help human beings reconnect with the nonhuman kin they live alongside. The stories are narrated from the perspective of gossiping organisms, who share stories about their lives, and even gossip about humans living among them. They communicate with various languages like chemical signatures, alluring odours, and inaudible audio- proving gossip isn’t exclusive to humans.

Using novel biological interfaces called "Objects of Attraction”, made of pheromone emitting yeasts and biomaterials to create a skin-based interface, the project aims to reconnect humans with other non-human species like microbes and bacteria that live in their home by attracting gossip. The project invites you to rediscover your home from a fresh perspective, connecting with the microbial cloud that surrounds you. It reveals the skin's true nature as an active living interface, challenging the perception of it as a barrier or a place to cleanse microbes. Instead, it provides a profound connection to another world.

Among the zeros and ones of human technology, nature has its own technology expressed in a’s, c’s, g’s, and t’s. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is the OG of technology. There’s a reason it’s referred to as the building blocks of life - it’s the ultimate data storage server. It is estimated that a single gram of DNA can store 215 petabytes (215 million GB). @growyourowncloud explores how DNA data storage methods can bring about a new materiality around data, inspiring thoughts on a future where data is a sustainable and public resource. Urban Data Forest
Exhibition reimagines the city as a site of data storage in plants and trees. It explores the possibility of how DNA data storage technology could transform urban spaces, bringing nature and data back to the city.

Two types of Urban Data Forest are proposed: ‘The Breathing Museum’ which serves to archive public and cultural data, and ‘Living Archives’ which are forests primarily dedicated to citizens as facilities in which they can store their personal data.

Presented at @zkmkarlsruhe

Urban Data Forest was created as part of Repairing the Present, an EU S+T+ARTS Residency. The project was developed in collaboration with engineering firm Witteveen+Bos supporting research into an environmental vision for the city of The Hague (NL) in 2050.

CODES AND ALGORITHMS. Wisdom in a calculated world.

Our last project takes you on a journey through different areas in which algorithms impact our society: the importance of their neutrality and efficiency, the risks of algorithmic bias, the tools available to protect data privacy, the connection between humans and artificial intelligence, and how algorithms contribute to finding solutions to problems that we would otherwise take years to solve or decipher.

Nu te zien: Grow Your Own Cloud

Now on view: Grow Your Own Cloud

From this weekend, the installation ‘Urban Data Forest’ by @growyourowncloud has been added to the exhibition 'The scent of the internet'. This collective of artists and scientists explores ways in which data can be stored in the DNA of trees and plants. Their research offers a vision of a (future) world in which design is a collaboration between species, ecosystems and technologies. The project is part of the development of the environmental vision for The Hague 2050.

Urban Data Forest is presented in collaboration with @highlightdelft

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We found the idea behind @growyourowncloud extraordinary. The green biotech company is developing green data solutions through DNA data storage in plants.

Facing the problems relating to data today -high energy consumption, huge CO2 emissions and more- the innovative company developed a regenerative solution : making data storage carbon absorbing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Concretely, the biotech company translates digital data, like JPEGs and MP3s, from binary to DNA and uses synthetic biology to create plants that can store data and capture CO2.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The company has developed a data decoding processes using DNA sequencing equipment able to read the genetic information of organisms and digital data stored in their genome.
