had the pleasure of being interviewed by @onlyonephilemon_ for @kwalitykontentt about film criticism and journalism in Nigeria. Philemon's questions allowed me reflect on my journey into film writing, thoughts about Nigerian film industry and other thoughts.

deeply grateful to Philemon and the entire KwalityKontent team for this interview. this is possibly my first stand alone interview since i started interrogating the Nigerian film industry.

thanks to @ade_toniii for taking these pictures on a random Monday @gugurustudios

"We were tired of fighting to make space within somebody else’s structure. We wanted to build our own, with care and longevity, that could occupy space in Edinburgh consistently." - @carmxnthompson

We had the pleasure of chatting with @seyivortex from Culture Custodian about bringing the second Jali Film Weekender to life.

Thank you for a beautiful conversation ✨

in 1993, Mike Bamiloye wrote and directed Agbara Nla, which became a generational classic within and outside Christian circles. in 2026, the film returns as Agbara Nla: The Return, directed by Damilola Mike-Bamiloye and Joshua “JayMikee” Bamiloye.

to craft the visual world, the expertise of Temi Ami-Williams (Costume Designer), Abisoye Omotosho (Special Effects and Make Up), and Joy Kadiri (Production Designer) were enlisted.

i spoke with the trio about the film's visual world and cross-departmental collaboration.

the Black Market team made history and as one of the over 50k Nigerians that witnessed it, i had to review the event.

"Nigerians’ obsession with Nollywood is undoubtable. En masse, they arrive in cabs, danfo and okada, and move, orderly and disorderly, on the queue, unified by the Black Market’s team vision: setting a new record. The N2000 must have inspired more attendance. But, for Nigerian filmmakers, distributors, and marketers, the large number should provide insight around affordability and cinema experience."

one of the good fortunes of being a African conscious culture writer is watching, interrogating, and documenting moments and films beyond Nollywood.

this fortune led to my interview with @aryy.mov (thanks to Ique Langa of Profeta's fame for the introductory email) about his film, Submergido, the Cabo Delgado war, and the film's subject matter.

In the never-ending pursuit of knowledge and mastery in one's craft, there are experiences that leave a mark on you. Experiences like the recently concluded The Lagos Review Writing Weekend. I enjoyed the lectures, the tasks, the hospitality, but most of all the people because it's as much fun as it is humbling to be reminded that writers, too, are people.

I'm grateful to have been part of this cohort of The Lagos Review Writing Weekend, and I look forward to more insightful and wholesome experiences courtesy of @lagosreview

for my latest, i wrote a review of Moses Inwang's Ordinary People, an eight-episode series currently showing on Netflix. it takes a curious look into the private lives of its ordinary characters who lives in a fittingly named Mirage Estate.

for my review, my attention was chiefly on how the series is committed to dumbing characters and contexts for its viewers. it did this to the point of distress. hence the title of my review: Moses Inwang believes in dumbing things down. maybe it's a narrative flaw or not can be decided after watching the series and reading my review.

Khalid Balogun’s Ripped wants to say something about youth unemployment, the commercialisation of public space, and the Agberoes and SCRAMP policies squeezing Lagos’s creative third spaces out of existence. And it does say it, clearly, urgently. But somewhere between the message and the medium, the film loses its grip on craft. Seyi Lasisi's review asks the harder question: can a film be politically conscious and artistically hollow at once: and what does it cost when characters become ideas before they become people?

A critical read on Ripped, funding, taste, and the limits of message-driven cinema. Now on Moving Grounds Journal.

after watching Colours of Fire, i had to do a quasi-career retrospective on Niyi Akinmolayan’s filmography. that took me back to Kajola. as i wrote the essay, the question kept shifting until i arrived at a presentable draft.

"The films’ marketing boasts of a new and inventive experience and filmmaking language. Yet, film after film remain barren of those promises."

thanks to @jephriejude, @j_chiemeke, and my editors.
