Pitter Patter (Umbrella)

This project celebrates the hybrid and mixed cultural experience of 2nd gen Bangoli immigrants; translating the auditory, visual, textural and olfactory experience of ancestral home in London. This enquiry takes the shape of a range of artefacts. Here is a corrugated aluminium umbrella; heavy rainfall is one of the few things the two places have in common, mixing traditional corrugated roofing from Bangladesh with umbrellas which are seen as a British icon. The umbrella emulates the sound, sight and scent of a traditional Bangoli village home during rainfall but in the uk; there is a very distinct sound corrugated roofing makes which can now be experienced here.

A helmet and a shield made as a celebration of the protection modern medicine and science provides us.

Helmet made from used & discarded medicine blister packaged stitched through a 3d printed frame with a shredded medicine box plume.

The ring emulates the sound, sight and scent of a traditional Bagnoli village home during rainfall but in the uk; there is a very distinct sound corrugated roofing makes which can now be experienced here by the user running their nail across the corrugation

EuroCentric Pigeonhole

My little cousin once threw a tantrum over a video game only having ethnic looking characters, which begged the question, was she born with prejudice or conditioned to be so. After looking further into it I stumbled down the racial bias rabbit hole portrayed within children’s toy. This toy box forces the users to push through Eurocentric beauty ideals: conveying how these limited ideas are set in stone from a young age through the design of toys.

Me and @jolezwong were discussing the frustrating process of trying to get a human person for help on the home office helpline, especially during the rollout of eVisas, lots of delays, hang ups and dead end after clicking through multiple option. This project highlights this engineered frustration in the form of a satirical helpline for when helplines aren’t working, like talking to a brick wall.

Shopping Experience

Given my ethnic appearance living in a conservative area, I have developed habits to appear as innocent as possible whilst shopping, like not accessing my pockets whilst in the shop unless I am at the till. I have mapped these ritualistic behaviour along a mugshot line of this self portrait mini figure. It portrays what its like being stereotyped into pigeon-holes, using mini figure as a way to communicate how ingrained micro aggression can be.

Hand carved jelutong, 3d printed grey resin, clear vacuum formed PVC and digitally printed graphics.

Camp Skeuomorph (Embroidered Patches)

Exploring the various escapades and tales of the web, the community and camaraderie that is shared in these spaces are often overlooked and under appreciated. These patches exists as a celebration of the chosen family you can acquire through new media; appreciating the freedom of expression, movement and belief the tiny pixels of a cursor affords us. by @sged_mash
