Sorry to miss today’s issue launch at the University Art Association of Canada (UAAC) conference in Montreal!

This special issue of RACAR (Revue d’art canadienne / Canadian Art Review) entitled Contested Landscapes: Wilderness Parks and Shifting Narratives quietly came out in February of this year. I feel grateful and proud to have contributed to this timely piece of work, alongside some truly exceptional scholars.

Thanks to our editors Stéphanie Hornstein and Georgia Phillips-Amos, as well as Saelan Twerdy at RACAR, for their patience and care. Thanks to @house9design for their beautiful design work.

Festival Program sneak peak: 👀 Our panel discussion on Diversity and Inclusion in Rock Climbing (and outdoor rec/sports in general) will be moderated by the incredible Shabana @shabanasabreenali !

Shabana is a racialized climber from the East Coast, who has had the privilege of climbing and adventuring for over 25 years. She is an active co-facilitator for the QTBIPOC community climbing initiative BelayAll @belay.all and the co-founder of the South Asian Climbers Coalition (SACC) @southasianclimberscoalition .

Shabana recently completed a Master’s at UBC, which focused on the racialized experiences of South Asian climbers in colonially-named Canada. She now works as the Marketing & Communications Assistant at The Hive @hiveclimbing climbing gyms in Vancouver, while continuing to engage in academic work, community projects, and climbing (of course)!

We are also excited to welcome a small panel of guest speakers, including representatives from @belay.all @soul.of.miistaki and @pridesquamish . If you haven’t already, we recommend giving these groups a follow to learn more about, and support, inclusive communities in BC and Alberta!

The panel discussion will be taking place at our Rock and Rise festival on Saturday July 6th from 7-8pm at the Loggers Sports festival grounds. Head to www.rock-and-rise.com/festival to check out our complete weekend schedule (and anything else you’d like to know about our upcoming event!).

Only a handful of admission tickets and clinics spots remaining, so grab ‘em while you can! Less than one month until the big weekend and we can’t wait learn, connect and celebrate together 💜

Part II of my master’s project. An imagined ‘elsewhere’ in so-called Canada. A tiny glimpse of what transpired in Part I. A project pitched 2 years ago, in December of 2020.

If you live on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations and you have feelings about this photograph, come by The Hive bouldering gym on Industrial Ave and take the 5-minute online questionnaire.

On display until December 15th.
