A pair of Nakashima Conoid chairs from Walnut and ebony. The grain on this walnut speaks for itself and the ebony is only improved by the subtle facets left by the spokeshave. The finish is spar varnish with mineral oil and BLO. There’s one detail that I like that doesn’t photograph well. The seat has a double concave/double convex saddle. The underside of the saddle matches the curves of the concave top. by @shakerdave1

Twin Nakashima inspired chairs. These are the 4th, and 5th copies I’ve completed of this timeless design. I wouldn’t say they are a “fun” chair to build because the tolerances are so demanding but to my eye the design is so elegant it’s all worth it. I’m grateful for some invaluable advice I received from @bergerwoodworking by @shakerdave1

A couple of George Nakashima inspired chairs. I tried not to deviate too far from his original concept because…. Perfection! These are made from walnut and big leaf maple. by @shakerdave1

A simple cabinet to hold and hide all of the wires and boxes that sometimes come with a TV and WiFi setup. The case is Mahagony with a Potassium Chromate wash and the doors have a fun waterfall Bubinga veneer. The doors are spring loaded because every pull I could think of just didn’t quite work. by @shakerdave1

Saber feet from FWW #135 back in 1999.
It will sit under a small cabinet. Since I don’t usually work in this style I had to spend a little too much time figuring out the spatial considerations of the mortise and tenons. It is a satisfying for me to solve a problem that has pretty serious consequences if you mess up the order of operations. by @shakerdave1

In his book- The Soul of a Tree - George Nakashima makes a statement that a difference of 1/16” can make or break a good design. This is a prototype so I’m feeling comfortable trying a few things but that quote keeps me from straying too far from the intended plan. It’s not glued up and there is lots of seat shaping that remains. I tend toward rushing when it comes to all things woodworking so I assembled it as is and plan to stare at it for a few days and just allow it to be. by @shakerdave1

A Library step… or a shop step. I was recently gifted three items. Some wide boards of Honduran mahogany, a complete set of Fine Woodworking Magazine and a quart of Potassium Dichromate. I was lucky enough to incorporate all 3 into this project.
Issue 17 has a diagram of this step with very little in the way of description. It recommends you tilt the dovetails to match the orientation of the tilted grain pattern. It then says to make a full size diagram and get all of the angles needed from there. It felt like the technical challenge from The Great British Baking Show. ( step 2 - make the tart) Lots of head scratching later. Asymmetric tilted beveled dovetails, beveled dado with incorporated tenons. All done with a hand saw chisel and router plane. The super deep dark color comes from a single wash coat of the potassium dichromate ( warning - known carcinogen) followed by wiping varnish.
Not an easy project but certainly a fun way to spend the weekend. A real test of your problem solving abilities. Try it. by @shakerdave1
