Steam bending crests for Velda’s class starting next Monday. This time I tried a couple new things that really helped this bend go well. Recommended to me by my friend Dave @shakerdave1 I went ahead and cut out the profile of the crest before steaming. This reduced the amount of material that had to be bent and will allow these to dry out quite a bit faster on the form because of all the end grain exposed from the curves. The other thing I did was make some short pipe clamps (9 inches long) for pulling the very end of each piece tight to the form. I’ve always struggled getting the clamps tight enough to pull it around, but these little guys have no trouble and they are compact enough to go into the kiln with the whole package when the time comes. This white oak bent beautifully – 10/10…👏

We had a wonderful time this week building Velda’s chairs! One of the guys had to leave a little early but will be back Monday to just finish up. Velda’s Rocking Chair Class! - SPOT FILLED Here’s a rare opportunity to build a Velda’s rocker with me at my shop in central Texas! I currently have a class scheduled in mid September by special request from two gentlemen and have decided to add one more spot. This is a fairly advanced chair to build, and would ask that you have prior chair making experience before signing up. Happy new year everyone!! Even though 2022 was very busy and full of plenty of challenges, looking back through some of these pictures I feel so grateful for the wonderful people that I’ve got to meet and spend time with this past year. I believe that relationships are the most important thing to grow and maintain in this life and in that way I have been blessed beyond measure! And 6 more chairs are born! This fantastic group finished their chairs around 1:00 pacific time and they turned out great. This has been a fun week working with these students to build @curtisbuchananchairmaker democratic side chair. We had issues with some checking and honey combing like I don’t usually see on these parts because we were able to get the kiln here hotter than I can back at my shop - live and learn! Many thanks to @shakerdave1 for hosting this class in his shop and graciously providing my family with a place to stay as well. Also a huge thank you to @gallag.j for his enthusiastic help this entire week. Go follow Jason if you don’t already and be on the lookout for some classes he hopes to offer in the near future- would highly recommend him! Also thanks to Heather, Rob, Kurt and Richard for making the time to be here this week and all the good hard work invested in these chairs.
