When I first created the Girls in Gis Instagram account, I would struggle to find content to share. Mind you this is back in 2011. We’ve come a long way since. Today I open up my Instagram and the algorithm is inundated with amazing inspirational women in jiu Jitsu killing it!

I love to see the ripple effect and how far these ladies are gonna take it. Attended my 1st @openmato karaoke + women’s open mat and it didn’t disappoint!! The Korean in me came for the karaoke, but the real win was the good company and great vibes! I’ve never been so tempted to grab the gi from my trunk and jump on the mats. I can’t wait to be able to roll at the next one! It’s not often that I get to participated events, but when I do it, reminds me of why I chose this path. I feel so very honored to be a part of women’s jiu jitsu during this time. To see where we’ve come from and to see where we’re going as pretty amazing! Anything is possible! by @shamasko

Nem toda transformação começa com uma medalha. Algumas começam quando uma mulher decide criar espaço para que muitas outras possam permanecer.

Shama Ko conheceu o jiu-jitsu em 2003 por meio de uma turma exclusiva para mulheres. Aquele ambiente de acolhimento foi essencial para sua entrada no esporte — e ajudou a definir a missão que ela assumiria anos depois.

A comunidade Girls in Gis nasceu em 2009, pelas mãos de Ashley Nguyen. Em 2010, Shama estruturou a organização e passou a trabalhar para ampliar o projeto sem perder sua essência: unir mulheres de diferentes equipes, idades e níveis de experiência.

Hoje, o Girls in Gis promove eventos, desenvolve lideranças femininas e oferece bolsas e apoio para reduzir as barreiras de entrada e permanência no jiu-jitsu.

Shama transformou solidariedade em movimento. E mostrou que liderar também é preparar o caminho para que outras mulheres avancem.

You know it’s a good trip when you’re having so much fun you don’t take many photos. 😂 Thank you Maui for your love and warm embrace. Round 18 of 22 ✔️

What a crazy journey this has been. As I roll towarrd the finish line I look back at how far I’ve come.

Cancer has been my greatest teacher. It has brought so many blessings into my life and I am forever grateful for the lessons I’ve learned along the way. Through this process I’ve not only evolved, but I’ve been reminded of who I am and what i am capable of.

For the first time in my life I chose myself over everything else… and that has been the greatest lesson of all. I have to have a full cup to fill others. Never again will I take myself for grated.

Hard times are what built me and every hurdle in life has prepared me for the greatest challenge I’ve ever faced. I’ve done a lot in the 47 years I’ve been privileged to be on this earth, and I intend on living each and every moment to the fullest until my last breath. You ain’t seen nothing yet cause I’m just getting started and I’m coming back stronger than ever! Look out cause I’m coming in hot! by @shamasko

If only they knew the pain behind those eyes. I can tolerate a lot of things, but the one thing I have the hardest time with is suffering. I am no stranger to it. As a child, I suffered alone. As an adult, I choose to heal and spread light. Facing our demons isn’t easy, and it’s been extremely difficult path. But along the way, it reminded me of who I am and just how powerful I am. My scars have helped to shape me, but doesn’t define me. Most importantly they will always remind me to be kind, loving and compassionate. You never know how someone is struggling, by @shamasko

16 years later and I still feel the same way that I did the first time I stepped on a mat at Girls in Gis. That feeling that comes from sharing the mats with incredible Women and Girls is unmatched. Since moving back home, my goal has been to give back and contribute to the amazing Jiu Jitsu community in Hawaii. With each event that we do it makes me more and more excited about what is possible! I can’t wait to see where we go together!

Thank you @vsslunion @melbjj12 and @thedevineintervention for an incredible afternoon and for reminding me why we do what we do. Thank you to the incredible team of ladies that are on this journey with me helping to make these opportunities possible. Always a great seeing my BJj sisters. I used to think that the most precious thing was time… But after going through everything I have I’ve learned that the most precious thing is life. Working on a farm has taught me just how precious it is. But what I’ve come to learn is that death is just as much a part of life as birth. And although it’s never gets easier, I’ve learned through all of my experiences to treasure each and every moment because we don’t know when it’s gonna be our last. So very grateful for each and every day. 🫶 by @shamasko
