This dreamy Santa Barbara home was designed as a gathering place for family, with spectacular ocean views as a very nice bonus. Interior designer Susan Shand and her daughter Ryan, co-owners and co-designers of Shand Design (@shanddesign), filled the house with collected antiques, artwork, books, music, and treasures gathered from around the world, creating a home that feels layered, welcoming, and deeply personal.

We’re Ryan and Susan Shand, a mother-daughter interior design firm specializing in high-end residential design.

For anyone just finding us: Susan founded this studio over a decade ago after a career as a creative director. She’s the eye, the taste, and the instinct behind everything we make. I (Ryan) came to design from the operations world (three acquisitions before 30, including Honey’s $4B sale to PayPal) and joined five years ago to build the business behind the beauty. Together we rebuilt this studio from the ground up

We design homes from Santa Barbara to the Palisades, Aspen, and Palm Beach, but we don’t have one signature “look.” We believe your home should be an expression of who you are, which is exactly why no two of our projects look alike.

We’re family first, human first, and more than a little obsessed with getting the details right. And beyond the pretty rooms, we share the real, behind-the-scenes side of what it actually takes to run a design business.

Welcome! We’re so glad you’re here. Stick around, there’s a lot coming 👀 #interiordesigners #familybusiness #motherdaughter #homerenovation by @shanddesign

We’ve all seen the “day in the life of an interior designer” reels, but if we’re being honest the true day in the life is much less glamorous than the job really lets on.

The reveals and the sourcing? Maybe 10% of it. The other 90%? Project management. Site visits. Procurement. Field calls. Warehouse runs. Logistics and returns. And a LOT of communication.

Our job isn’t to have the incredible experience, it’s to be the ones CREATING it, so our clients can. A real design firm takes care of you, so all the chaos behind the scenes stays invisible… and all you feel is the luxury of building your dream home.

Swipe through for our honest version of a day in the life. Don’t worry, we’ll still share the glamorous portions. They tell an amazing story, after all 🤎 #interiordesign #dayinthelife #interiordesigner #designbehindthescenes by @shanddesign

MONDAY MISTAKES Ep 16: Welcome back to mistakes we’ve made (or watch others make) as interior designers, so you don’t have to! Today, MEASURING 📏📐

Here’s something that surprises people: we have a full-time drafter on staff. We offer 3D renderings. We do detailed 2D drawings. And we STILL (in most cases) measure everything by hand and blue-tape the space before ordering.

Why? Because a drawing can be perfect on paper and still feel completely wrong in the room. That gorgeous 60” console fits on screen but then you tape it on the actual wall and occasionally it can feel like it’s swallowing an entryway.

NOTE: the more you do this, the more it becomes second nature and you can naturally feel the space and have to tape less. But sometimes clients need to feel it too. There are now companies like @walkyourplansla & @walkyourplans that really helps you achieve this as well.

Measure twice, order once. The blue tape is cheap. Reordering custom is not. And before you ask, yes, this works for our remote projects too. Mistakes still happen, hence these series, but limiting them is crucial.

MONDAY MISTAKES Ep. 15: Welcome back to mistakes we’ve made (or watched others make) as interior designers. Today, let’s talk about the importance of a good MIRROR.

Interesting mirrors are incredibly hard to come by, which is why everyone ends up with the same round black mirror.

A beautiful, sculptural, characterful mirror can completely make a room… but only if you know where to actually look. So we pulled back the curtain in our latest Substack “Beyond The Basic: MIRRORS”. These are the sources we get asked about the most, all in one place.

Comment MIRRORS and we’ll send the article with links your way. #mirrors #designtips #designsources #sourcebook #interiordesigner by @shanddesign
