Are you a writer seeking a writing circle and some support on the writer’s path?

I have space for 2–3 writers to join the monthly {Write to Change the World} Writing Circle I facilitate on Zoom.

As we turn toward fall — with its back-to-school energy, sharpened pencils, fresh notebooks, and renewed rhythms — it feels like a beautiful time to ask:

What do I need in my creative ecosystem in order to thrive?

Every writer’s answer is personal, but I believe one common element is community. Writing is often solitary work, but the fuel to keep going frequently comes through structure, encouragement, witnessing, and connection with others on the path.

These monthly writing circle gatherings have been a source of community, inspiration, heart-fullness, and support — a place where writers and their writing can blossom and flourish.

You are welcome to bring up to 3 pages of writing to share. Work can be freshly inked or more polished — I LOVE when writers bring first drafts! — and all levels and genres of writers are welcome.

This isn’t a critique group. It’s a supportive circle where you’ll hear reflections on what we appreciated in your writing, what we want more of, and possibilities we can see for your work.

We meet the first Wednesday of each month from 6:30–9 pm Central Time, with an optional writing practice/check-in at 6 pm for those who desire that.

Dates are: Sept 2, Oct 7, Nov 4, Dec 2, and Jan 6.

I also send writing prompts mid-month and resources/follow-up after each circle.

Exchange for the five circles is $125. Scholarships are available.

I’ve had the gift of working with writers for more than 30 years, and I love supporting writers — whether it’s encouraging someone to keep going, helping them trust their voice, or offering practical guidance as a book makes its way into the world. I’ve been a catalyst and support for more than a dozen books, and I’d be honored to be in your corner, too.

First circle is next week: Wednesday, September 2.

Please DM me if you’re interested or have questions. 📝💫🖊️

30 years. 10,958 days. It's no small feat to (& a great blessing) keep saying I do to another person over three plus decades, and I am so incredibly grateful that Michael and I have kept choosing each other through it all.

We spent a delightful weekend in Chicago celebrating our 30th anniversary, doing a lot of reminiscing and laughing and being in awe at all that our lives together have been.

Our sweet daughter took care of all the planning for us - such a gift - and at each place we were delighted with good wishes and treats. Chicago is a great town, and it was wonderful to have time there.

As I get older, Warren Zevon's encouragement to enjoy every sandwich becomes more of a compass for me. To savor the simple joys of each day, especially those with Michael, my beloved, whom I have had the gift of so much time with and hope for much, much more.

We have been watching the nuthatch parents tend to their tree hole nest for several weeks now. Their diligence is inspiring. I think long-term anything (be it relationship, creativity, or any form of practice) is a little like these nuthatches - showing up every day, choosing to keep at it, not giving up.

Thank you Michael for being you, for the gift of being your wife and for all the love and devotion you pour into our beautiful nest of a life. I love you for sentimental reasons, always. taken in Chicago, Illinois by @shannonjacksonarnold

Dear Luminous Light 💫🌟✨

Amid the busy-ness of the holiday season, it's essential for me to make intentional space for inner listening. To slow down enough to hear the whispers of my soul and the longings of my body and spirit.

I invite you to make space for this kind of deep inner connection and join me for the "Eternal and Evergreen" a Winter Solstice mini-retreat. For the first time, I'm happy to share there are two options to choose from:

1. In-person at our home in Eagle, WI on Friday, December 19 from 9 am-noon US Central Time. $50

2. OR Virtually via Zoom on Saturday, December 20 from 9 am-noon US Central time $40

Our guiding supports and archetypes for this Winter Solstice gathering will be White Lynx, Mountain Laurel and Clear Quartz.

There will be space for solo sacred listening, group sharing, a guided meditation and a ceremony to mark the shifting of the season. You'll leave with sustaining guidance for the coming season as well as practices to abide in what is eternal and evergreen as move into winter — a season of stillness and being with the dark. Life has been a wide-net kind of experience lately for me (and maybe for you too?!).

I find myself vacillating between soulful centeredness and heart-centered gratitude — AND also stretched into new territory that is both exciting and sometimes scary and uncomfortably stretchy. (Hello! Eclipse season!! How's everyone navigating this eclipse corridor?!)

What has helped: I’m currently in Florida, and I love being able to walk by the ocean. There is something about the vastness of the ocean that is calming. Even with when the waves are crashing, my sense is that the ocean can hold all of it.

The ocean just one way to access this kind of inner steadying. Anytime I remember to pause and rest into a larger field of holding and knowing I can rest in this kind of oceanic awareness. Whether it's becoming present to my breath or my surroundings, sensing the gentle wisdom of my own heart, or tuning to the wider field of Love that I believe is always there for us.

Life gets so busy. There is so much to respond to — from current happenings in our lives to current events. And if you are anything like me, we can be driven by our "to-do" list, grinding to do do do.

But what I actually need more is a “to-be” list — a way to reorient myself — to reconnect to what is true and land in place of deep sanctuary.

This is one of the reasons I love to facilitate the seasonal retreats I’ve been hosting since 2016. They give participants — and me! — a way to make space for a sacred pause, to listen inwardly and to move into the next season of our lives in a more grounded and intentional way.

It is this cocoon of holding — the Void of Knowing — that will be a guiding theme for the Fall Equinox gathering.

I invite you to make space for this kind of soulful encounter and join me virtually for the "The Void of Knowing," a Fall Equinox mini-retreat on Friday, September 19 from 9 am-noon US Central Time.

As I will still be in Florida, this Fall Equinox mini-retreat will be offered via Zoom. There is also a DIY option if you can't make it live.

I'd love to host you for this illuminating and supportive retreat. If interested, DM me. Exchange $40; scholarships available. by @shannonjacksonarnold

**update circle is now FULL - lmk if you want to be on waitlist for the future.😊**

Are you a writer seeking a writing circle and some support on the writer’s path? I have 2-3 (update! Circle is full) openings in the fall/winter cohort of the {Write to Change the World} Writing Support Circle I facilitate.

These monthly {Write to Change the World} Writing Circle gatherings on Zoom have been a source of community, inspiration, heart-fullness, and witnessing whilst also being a place where writers and their writing blossom and flourish.

Writing is a solitary act, but the fuel and inspiration to keep writing and to keep striving comes through both structure AND our relationships and communities, often with others on the path.

I'd love to have you in our circle for the next 5 months —you are welcome to bring up to 3 pages of writing (either double-spaced & typed, or read from your journal). Work can be freshly inked or more polished — I LOVE it when writers bring the first drafts to share! — and all levels and genres of writers are welcome. This isn't a critique group, but a place where you will hear reflections of what we appreciated in your writing, what we want more of, possibilities we can see for your work.

We said goodbye to our Minnie girl today. She was 16-17 years old, & we are grateful we got to spend 13 of them with her. To say she was a good dog isn't enough. She was the best dog, a loyal friend, my favorite hiking partner, sweet & sassy. Always looking for a treat, always doing her pirouette that someone taught her before she was ours.

The smartest dog we ever had, she would stare at me & send thoughts to me. Often "is it dinner yet?" or "I need to pee" or "have you seen the possum"? She also could run heat out of her head, 3rd eye, or heart when she wanted to send you love. Michael was the biggest recipient of the "hot head" & even today she was sure to tell him one more time how he had her heart. Minnie was incredibly attached & devoted to Michael, as he was to her. We originally got her for Grace but Minnie mostly saw Grace as competition for Michael. Grace going to college & the pandemic meant more time with Michael. Even as she declined, these last years were her best years because Michael worked from home & she spent her days in her dog bed by his desk. I honor Michael for his tender care of her as she declined.

Minnie knew how to snitch the squirrel's peanuts when we weren't looking, could pick just the ripe black raspberries off the the bush, & loved to get a bone from the butcher & then parade around the house looking for a place to bury it. She was found on the streets of North Carolina, & she never lost her junkyard taste for the fragrant, fermented, foraged. She loved to open presents & wasn't above sniffing hers out & opening it before we got up Christmas morning.

She came to us knowing to stay close, a relief when you live on three wooded acres, across from the state forest. On the trails she never ran off. We called her the "baddest b**** in the forest" for she would bark at the horses four times taller when they passed on the trail.

She taught us how to love without walls, how to heal after abuse, how to be when outside (boundless joy, curiosity & delight) & on weekends ("get up! There's living to do!"). I cannot express how much we loved her or how much we will miss her. I hope she knows what a gift she was to us, our doggo forever. by @shannonjacksonarnold

I can feel my body is shifting to summer. All I want to do is lay on the green grass and watch the clouds float by. Swim in the lake. Marvel at the wee baby red pine squirrels and raccoons who are new to life on Earth (and to the fact that they need to be alert to the local feral cats!). Notice all that’s lush and blooming around me.

I’m glad that I am hosting my quarterly {Listen.Enjoy.Savor} retreat for Summer Solstice this Friday morning. I have been leading these seasonal retreats on the beautiful acres we call home for 9 years now. It's three hours of time to connect, listen and vision. I do these for the community, but also for me. I need the reminder that I am mapped on Nature. And like the plants around me, I go through cycles and changes too. It gives me a soulful pause to be aware that what this summer season is asking of me is different than what spring asked. I can only respond to these subtle shifts if I slow down and listen.

These circles are always full of magic, support and attract a really lovely circle of souls. Our theme for this Friday is Your Highest Calling, and I’ll be incorporating some of the insights gained on my recent Camino pilgrimage. We'll do a guided journey meditation, have time to be on the land here (and visit with Grandfather Oak and the labyrinth), have open reflection time and share in circle. We’ll work with archetypes, including peacock and the 8 pointed star. I make bespoke gift bags to delight and inspire. Exchange is only $50. I still have space for more attendees. Scholarships available if funds are tight. More info at link in bio or DM me to learn more. Would love to have you join me in making space to savor this transition into summer and to seeing what this season — and your body and soul — is craving.

And if you can’t join us in person, I’m curious to know what this season is asking of you — my two guiding words will be BEAUTY and DELIGHT. What are yours? (Thanks @leslie_asimplycreativelife for reflecting this to me). Hoping your summer season is full of all that fills you and holds meaning. by @shannonjacksonarnold

Day 6: Part 2: Arrival Santiago de Compostela

You have walked for six days, for almost 120 km (74 mi). It has been an epic journey — full of magic and muck, goodness and grit. It has been a walk of devotion, dedication and endurance. And it has been a graduation — for your daughter, who just finished college. And in some ways, for you as a parent, as well. All those years of shepherding your child through school, the ending of a parental role, a feat to celebrate. You are so proud of your daughter, who she is, how she found her way through, worked hard, and forged her own path. You are proud for the small part you played in her becoming the wise, centered, kind, poetic, exploratory soul she is.

You’ve been surprised at the grief you’ve felt the past few months. Maybe not surprised, because you have felt this grief before, this particular bittersweet stew of love, pride, and wistfulness that comes with parenting. Cheering your daughter as she crosses into a new phase of adulthood, whilst also wishing to time travel back to her being 3 years old, snuggling in your arms. It’s been a long journey to get to this point, and also it’s gone far too fast.

You feel grief that you are not 23 anymore either, but also gratitude you are not 23. You recognize how you are mirroring your daughter. You both are wayfinding, questioning and creating anew in this new chapter. Her entering full adulthood. You, at 54, a bird stretching its wings from a now-empty nest.

You recognize that this midlife threshold is teaching you the dance you will continue to master as you grow yourself into the elder you want to be — one who can be with the both/and of life, its joys and its heartbreaks, its blessings and its losses. The you who understands how you are always both arriving and leaving.

It’s this soup of emotions you feel now that you have arrived in Santiago de Compostela. Gratitude for the journey you have taken together as a family, gratitude for your body even with its limitations, gratitude for the gift of being alive.

Day 6 :: Arrival in Santiago de Compostela, Part 1

It felt like Christmas morning. I woke up early, excitement dancing inside me, and considered leaving for Santiago around 5 am. Today would be our last day on the Camino. Like most threshold experiences, our week had felt out of ordinary time, as if years had passed since we started.

The night before, we decided to leave from our hotel in Lavacolla — so we had our easiest distance yet of just 10 km (about 6.2 miles). Our hope was to make the pilgrim’s mass at noon at the cathedral. But the walk starts with a significant 2km hill to climb. My half-day rest day helped a lot, but I wasn’t confident on how I would do once actually on the trail. Around 7 am I told Michael and Grace to enjoy breakfast and set off on my own to meet the hill at my own pace, knowing they would catch up to me soon.

We met up at the second cafe and continued the last few km into Santiago together. I was grateful for the energy I felt, and grateful for the decision yesterday to stop and take a taxi to the hotel.

As we neared Santiago, we passed three peregrinos — two on crutches, one on a cane with someone pushing a wheelchair next to her. I was in awe of their determination. I thought of my own body, appreciating all it could do, appreciating what it accomplished this past week, whilst also savoring the strength I currently have, strength that isn’t guaranteed in the future.

Today I felt so much gratitude — for the journey, for my body, for the beauty around me, for Michael and Grace. For the gift of walking with Grace into this next chapter of her life, post-college. She didn’t want to walk across the stage at the formal commencement ceremony, choosing this walk instead. I’ve always admired that she is someone who is true to herself. I felt grateful we got to do this pilgrimage, this Camino de Santiago where peregrinos have walked since the 9th century.

Walking into Santiago de Compostela, I felt grateful for the many teachings of the Way, for the beautiful and piercing lessons of this week, for the moments of magic and for each mile (all 65-plus of them). ... continued in comments taken in Catedral de Santiago by @shannonjacksonarnold

Day 5 Arzúa → A Rúa predicted mileage: 19 km/ 11.8; actual mileage: 4.8

I woke up today feeling so tired, my muscles had no energy. Even just as we were starting today, I wanted to sit down. This was our second last day of hiking. We left from Arzúa, where the Camino Primitivo and the Camino Frances (the most popular route) joined with our Camino Norte. Suddenly we were among muchos peregrinos. It felt like we were queuing up for a rock concert or a ride at Disney Land. There were now vendors set up along the route, cafes packed with people and tables littered with plates and cups, and single file lines on narrow stretches of the path.

On one hand, it was joyful to see the other pilgrims, each with their unique Camino journey and style and to hear so many different languages. We were not alone on this journey, and some had been traveling their Camino for more than a month at this point.

But on the other hand, feeling so tired, I felt salty about the crowds and missed walking mostly in solitude, rarely seeing another pilgrim until our hotel for the night.

I was moving extra slow, and streams of peregrinos passed me by, even those much older than me. This only added to my despair at how I was feeling. Internally the negative chatter volumed up — why didn't I have more energy? What's wrong with me?

Before we left, Cat, @catcaracelo, who leads the Creative Depth coaching program I am in, suggested that I allow the journey to be imperfect. The wisdom of this was to help me be okay with whatever happened and to help me loosen my grip on wanting everything to go perfectly. This is good medicine for a recovering perfectionist like myself.
