My Indian Creek climbing season begins around December 1st ❄️ when everyone leaves. SuperCrack parking lot is empty, there is no one at the base of any of the walls. It’s a dream to be here during the winter. The days are short and cold, but I imagine this must have been how it felt in Indian Creek many years ago. Endless possibilities, open spaces and silence.

I have not been on social media that much the last few months as I have been driving back-and-forth to Salt Lake City completing my 2nd 500 hour Pilates instructor certification. Always a good time to return to “trench warfare” for a lap before the drive home!

Spent the other weekend with Pam and team documenting this climb that she FA’d some time ago. It demands commitment, solid nerves, skin and blood. After witnessing the pain and struggle she went through to send this for me, it’s no surprise that to this day, it hasn’t been repeated. Anyone feel up to the challenge??

Finding flow deep in the desert ✨🏜️

Putting up new lines requires more than technical climbing skills. It requires you to be able to look at the rock and imagine something new. You also need the patience & effort to turn that vision into reality. RIP Jenna ❤️ In memory of the extraordinary @omgjenna Jenna N. Schaal-O’Connor, 38, who passed away April 17 in a paragliding accident.

I met Jenna in 2019 at my first “Art of Offwidth” clinic in the Supercrack parking lot in Indian Creek. She showed up in her favorite bright pink and yellow shirt and rhinestone sunglasses, said a few words no one could understand, and when someone asked where she was from, she just said, “California.” That was Jenna.

She became one of the strongest offwidth climbers I’ve ever known and a brilliant first ascensionist. We climbed and established routes together in Indian Creek, Arizona, Wyoming, and Moab.

She lived boldly—always in color, always completely herself. She loved weird diet sodas, pastries, her cat Cato, and made everything feel like an adventure—even the scariest moments, like rappelling from the rim down a choss-filled ravine in Indian Creek in the dark without headlamps.

Jenna would vanish for months at a time. I wouldn’t hear from her, but I’d hear stories—paragliding in Colombia, on a pastry tour somewhere in Europe. She felt like a missing piece you couldn’t find, and then suddenly she’d reappear and everything clicked back into place.

Jenna, I really thought I’d see you again.
And losing you feels like losing a time in Indian Creek that will never be the same.

We did so many first ascents together—zany ones. scary ones. And you were always laughing.
I can still hear that. You were deeply loved, and you will be deeply missed. Much love to all of those who knew Jenna ❤️

First day of the Art of Offwidth Clinic in Joshua Tree, CA with the incredible team at Athena Guides @athenarockclimbing — it was absolutely fantastic.

We had an amazing group of students who came ready to learn, push themselves, and embrace the unique and creative challenges of offwidth climbing! I’m so grateful for the opportunity to share this style of climbing with such a motivated crew.

Huge thank you to our extraordinary students and to the wonderful team at Athena Guides and especially @kellylynetteturner for helping make this clinic such a great experience.
