On this International Day of Non-Violence, we are thrilled to announce Indian-Australian tenor Shanul Sharma will portray M.K. Gandhi in SATYAGRAHA by @philipglass at the Detroit Opera House on April 17, 2027.

As part of Glass’ 90th birthday season, this unprecedented operatic experience will extend beyond the stage into a transcendent visual and sound meditation on truth, resistance, and spiritual force.

“Shanul Sharma brought an exquisitely nuanced tenor to the bookish, clean-cut Don Ottavio.”
So pleased to have received this lovely review in the UK’s @opera_magazine as Don Ottavio in @operaaustralia recently concluded National Tour of Don Giovanni. Thank you Paul Selar for your kind words and so glad you were able to catch our performance in Hobart! by @shanul_opera

“Between stimulus and response there is a space” - Love that space. Love it so you become that Space.

Singing ‘M.K. Gandhi’ in Philip Glass’ Satyagraha has been life transforming. Through the mesmeric power of Glass’ music and Krishna’s Sanskrit verses from the BhagavadGita, I felt validated and heard like never before - a rebirth of sorts.

This production at Staatsoper Hannover was a profound highlight. Directed by Daniel Kramer’s vision and conducted by Masaru Kumakura, it was as if a benevolent spirit had blessed us all to carry the message of peace and non-violence.

Grateful for this journey 🙏🕉️

Some moments last forever. Exactly one year ago I was a part of something magical and surreal at the Hamer Hall @artscentremelbourne. Singing Gandhi in @philipglass Satyagraha was probably the most important thing I’ve ever done.
Thank you @durkinrachelle @oliviacranwell1 @sarkisagnes @thesiansharp @alexanderseftonbaritone, Andrew Moran, Richard Anderson, Mo Tahu Matheson, @orchestravictoria and @operaaustralia for these unforgettable moments.

And now I’m off to do it all again at @staatsoperhannover 🙏🙏

Today, on the International Day of Non-Violence and the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi - 2nd of October, here’s an abridged version of the 'Evening Song' from Philip Glass’ opera Satyagraha.

Sung in Sanskrit, with verses drawn from the timeless Bhagavad Gita, the opera carries words that echo in the heart of every Indian. It is inspired by the life of Mahatma Gandhi and his path of Satyagraha, first developed during his time in South Africa and later guiding India toward independence in 1947.

This philosophy, over the years has inspired leaders and individuals such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi, Aldous Huxley, John Lennon and continues to do so even today. I feel that Mo Glass' music combined with the vibrations of Sanskrit, purifies the senses and the atmosphere around it bringing about an ethereal calm.

This aria closes the opera and is at once still and radiant; prophesising the rise of 'Dharma' (justice) whenever 'Adharma' (injustice) prevails.

From a phone call to holding the physical vinyl in my hands - what a journey! 🎶✨

It all kicked off back in 2022 when the amazing Ekaterina Shelehova (@ekaterinashelehova) reached out with an incredible proposition: joining Eric Lévi’s iconic ERA (@eramusic.official) as the opera tenor for their upcoming arena tour across France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Luxembourg (with Ekaterina starring as the opera soprano).
Coming from a heavy metal background, my inner rockstar couldn’t resist! 🤘✨
The tour was an absolute dream come true. Moving from the traditional operatic stage to performing in packed arenas for so many fans was an unbelievable thrill. Beyond the rush, I had the privilege of sharing the stage with legendary musicians I’ve looked up to for years - Rob Harris (@robharrisgtr) and Paul Turner (@paulturnerbass) (Jamiroquai), Ged Lynch (@gedlynchdrummer) (Peter Gabriel, Cat Stevens), Nicolas Montazaud (@nicolas_montazaud), and Eric Lévi himself. The experience challenged and grew me, both as an artist and as a person.

Eric and I kept in touch, and fast forward to 2024 - while I was singing the role of Gandhi in Philip Glass’s (@philipglass) Satyagraha for Staatsoper Hannover (@staatsoperhannover) - he invited me to record ‘The Fallen King’ for the new album Era VIII at @faust_records in Prague.
We shot the epic music video in mid-2025, released the single in early 2026, and today after more than half a million YouTube views, I’m holding the signed album in my hands. 💿🖤
A massive thank you to Eric, Ekaterina, and everyone who held their faith in me along the way. I’m so grateful to be part of this and cannot wait for the next tour! 🙏🙏❤️❤️

What’s your favorite track from the new release? Let me know below! 👇

Dear Friends,
A little while ago, as I was taking my first steps into the world of opera, I looked at a picture of the Palais Garnier in Paris and thought, ‘I’d love to work here one day’. And well, here we are!
The mesmeric beauty of this theatre is beyond words and to be present here as part of the creative process is a truly wonderful feeling.
Who would’ve thought that a boy from Jabalpur, India who later moved to Wagga Wagga, Australia would one day play a part in realising an opera by @philipglass about the life of our dear ‘Bapu’ - Mahatma Gandhi.
Grateful for all your support - from the bottom of my heart 🙏🙏🙏🙏
