OFF THE HOOK kicks off Wednesday as part of Melbourne Fringe for 4 shows only. I’d love to see you there. As we head into our final rehearsals, filled with live funk and soul music, circus, breaking, aerial, dance, sound, politics, joy and a fair bit of chaos, I keep looking around the room thinking: everyone here is seriously good at what they do.
I’m co-directing with Dela Victoria Amedume MBE (UK), with Jake Mason as Musical Director, alongside an extraordinary ensemble spanning aerial, acrobatics, breaking, dance and music. We have @JoanaDias, Roya TD, Demi Sorono and Shannen Wick with Dan West and Alex Roper joining Jake as Cookin’ on 3 Burners.
For the past few weeks we’ve been experimenting together with a format that’s part gig, part circus, part dance party, asking how we hold onto our groove when the noise of the outside world won’t let up.
Tyler Fitzpatrick has joined us from Sydney on production and lighting design, Darby James is helping shape the sound design, and Angel WL from 3 Fates Media has been documenting the process. I’m incredibly grateful to all of them for answering my call and bringing their A game.
We’ve been rehearsing the show at Circus Centre Melbourne, which has also allowed me to reconnect with Steph Cox who is heading up CCM and the Flying Fruit Fly Circus team, as well as the Circus Oz community. We’ve been so lucky to have Mike Finch and stephenburton generously sharing their expertise along the way.
Bringing international artists like Vicki and Joanna into a room with artists I love working with here in Melbourne, and seeing what comes out of that exchange, is both nerve wracking and exciting. Now we get to put it in front of an audience for the first time.
This is all made possible with the support of the Arts – British Council and Creative Australia.
Come see what we’ve made.
