OFF THE HOOK kicks off Wednesday as part of Melbourne Fringe for 4 shows only. I’d love to see you there. As we head into our final rehearsals, filled with live funk and soul music, circus, breaking, aerial, dance, sound, politics, joy and a fair bit of chaos, I keep looking around the room thinking: everyone here is seriously good at what they do. I’m co-directing with Dela Victoria Amedume MBE (UK), with Jake Mason as Musical Director, alongside an extraordinary ensemble spanning aerial, acrobatics, breaking, dance and music. We have @JoanaDias, Roya TD, Demi Sorono and Shannen Wick with Dan West and Alex Roper joining Jake as Cookin’ on 3 Burners. For the past few weeks we’ve been experimenting together with a format that’s part gig, part circus, part dance party, asking how we hold onto our groove when the noise of the outside world won’t let up. Tyler Fitzpatrick has joined us from Sydney on production and lighting design, Darby James is helping shape the sound design, and Angel WL from 3 Fates Media has been documenting the process. I’m incredibly grateful to all of them for answering my call and bringing their A game. We’ve been rehearsing the show at Circus Centre Melbourne, which has also allowed me to reconnect with Steph Cox who is heading up CCM and the Flying Fruit Fly Circus team, as well as the Circus Oz community. We’ve been so lucky to have Mike Finch and stephenburton generously sharing their expertise along the way. Bringing international artists like Vicki and Joanna into a room with artists I love working with here in Melbourne, and seeing what comes out of that exchange, is both nerve wracking and exciting. Now we get to put it in front of an audience for the first time. This is all made possible with the support of the Arts – British Council and Creative Australia. Come see what we’ve made. OFF THE HOOK 30 SEPT – 3 OCT Melbourne Fringe 🎟️ Tickets → link in bio @roya.thedestroya @demisorono @joana_____dias @3burners @tweakandtwang @jakemason.com.au @alexropermusic.yeah @shanwicky @vickiamedume @upswingaerial @lindacatalano.creative @quietriotcreative @tylzfitzpatrick

Get down to get yours! @3burners found a whole box of the last copies of the 2019 reissue of rhe modern classic that is the 2009 SOUL MESSIN’ the album that contains rhe song THIS GIRL. A Melbourne soul classic that has had over ONE BILLION STREAMS. Possibly due to the 2016 remix by @kungs or possibly just due to the funk. With great vocals by @kylieauldist too btw. The band has just returned from touring with the new drummer @alexropermusic.yeah who was described as “a young IDRIS MUHAMMAD” stylee. High praise indeed!! Brought in by @jakemason.com.au here and of course on the tour the axeman @tweakandtwang and now on vocals the incredible @shanwicky - Cookin have reached a new level, just a year before their 30 year anniversary! What a funk achievement! We do have an original pressing of SOUL MESSIN but thats $100. Get the reissue for only $50 and there are two more songs on it!!
